Tombstoning and Its Dangers
A look at the dangers tombstoning can cause.
With the summer holidays coming up, their have been fresh news warnings out. The latest craze is tombstoning. No, not the danger of being hit by a tomestone, the activity of jumping off a cliff with no safety equitment. It may seem harmless fun, jumping in the sea, but this activity could lead to parilasation or even fatalities in extreme conditions.
So, you ask, what is wrong with jumping off a cliff into the sea? Done it several times before so it should be safe right? WRONG! At a different time of day, the tide can be completely different. This could lead to the tide being to shallow so you hit your head off a rock which could cause brain damage, paralisation or even death. Even the most experienced tombstoners should take care and check the water before jumping in.
What exactly is tombstoning? It involves jumping into the sea from a cliff of some height (depends on your bravery and how much of a thrill you want) for your amusment. But it doesn`t have to be a cliff- arches and breakwaters are being increasely used. Tomestoning is not illegal but many experts and emergancy services do not recommed it for the severe consiquences as it is in unsuperivsed conditions.
The most dangerous thing about tombstoning is you are most likely to do it when your drunk, when you are under peer pressure or both. What most people fail to see about tombstoning is the dangers lie underwater. Sharp objects or rocks under the water lead to the incidents, not the fall itself. The worring thing is that tombstoning incidents have doubled in the last four years
Tombstoning is not expected to be outlawed any time soon and how can we stop people jumping in the sea? Experts recommend to check the water is safe before hand and do not do it if you do not want to. In the last five year, twelve people have been killed and others seriously injured. Remember to stay safe this summer, tombstoning can change the lives of people who do it.
