It is the first and foremost action to take. It puts the engineer within the periphery of solutions available to solve the particular problem generated. Within every functional part of a generator lies the operations that makes it work and it is still within the same operations that the fault of that functional part will occur.
Secondly is to analyze the facts that were gotten from the fault present. The analysis carried out will show the engineer the possible source of the problem that lead to shutdown or the change in normal characteristics of the generator. The same analysis guides the engineer to the particular area to be disassembled for repair. This will prevent a costly mistake in the area of repair.
Thirdly is to relate the facts gotten and analyzed to the symptoms of the problem found on the generating engine. This will bring the engineer to the specific area of repair and save much time and man power. For every fault found on an engine, there must be at least more than five reasons that lead to that fault and it is his relating technique that narrows it down to two or directly the one that is the cause.
To save much more time on getting to the site of repair, it is also wise to check the recent maintenance or repairs carried out on the engine and relate it to the present problem to know if it is the same cause of problem.
Double check the cause of the problem well and the area to disassemble before disassembling, in other to avoid waste of time or cause damage. When this is done, you then solve the problems using logic charts and doing the easiest things first. It is also wise to involve the use of workshop manual of manufacturers manual. This leads the engineer to the cause of the problem for a thorough repair. And after the repair has been made, we operate the engine to make sure that the problems have been corrected and the engine in good condition. It is also recommended that the engine be observed for sometime depending on what was repaired before leaving the site.
