Useful Tips on How to De-Stress
Tired from work? School? On the verge of a burnout? Here are useful tips on how to unwind and relax in the midst of chaos.

In these modern and fast-paced times, it is natural for you to feel as though you’re bombarded with so much demands without a clue as to how you’re able to even keep up. These demands, whether from school, work, friends or family can be a bit overwhelming at times to the point where you desperately just want to step on the brakes and beg for the world to just slow down.
The thing about living a fast-paced life is that the stress level that you often have to endure often has a tendency to take its toll on your mental and physical well-being (unless of course, you’re the type who actually derives satisfaction from constantly being pulled into different directions). To avoid ultimately reaching the point where you simply burn out, I’ve listed down some tips on de-stressing that have proven to be of much help in my own fast-paced life as well:
1. Breathe and be energized
Remember to breathe. It is a fact that doing breathing exercises from time to time (when done correctly) helps to improve your mental alertness. Through an exercise of doing slow and steady breathing (while standing or sitting up straight), more oxygen enters your blood stream, energizing you in the process. Remember that while doing this exercise, you should make an effort to relax, otherwise it won’t work as effectively.
2. Alter your mood through music
Music has its way of magically altering our moods. Some songs from the past allow us to vividly recall the best days of our lives as though they were only yesterday, evoking in us laughter and happiness. When under stress, it’s always a good idea to turn the volume up on your iPod and lose yourself in the music.
3. Get addicted to Endorphins
Just like the breathing exercises, physical activity can help energize you and improve your mental alertness by allowing more oxygen into your blood stream. Physical activity, however, has more to offer than just oxygen. Endorphins are released in the brain and are believed to have pain-relieving properties. They are usually associated with the term “Runner’s High”, which is a feeling of euphoria that one gets after continuous exercise.
4. Drop everything
Pushing yourself to work or deal with something for too long can push you on the verge of burning out. More than that, you might reach the point where you can’t push yourself any further. This works perfectly when facing a big project, where the pressure just weighs on you. Being as determined as you are, it’s a breeze to get things going but oftentimes we find ourselves stuck at that point where we are simply overworked. So drop it. Leave for a bit. Take a walk, have a casual conversation with somebody, play some Nintendo Wii or watch a mind-numbing movie. Everyone needs a break from time to time.
5. Express yourself
Talk to somebody you trust about what’s going on in your life. Express it through writing, art or by playing an instrument. It could be anything, as long as you find an outlet for you to express yourself. I personally love to hang around good-humored friends from the office, rant about work and have a good laugh about it afterwards. Some individuals who go through painful situations involving their familes or lovers, for example, resort to writing or art.
A positive mind is a healthy mind
The most important thing to remember, really, is to not keep the feeling of being stressed within you. Release it. Repeat steps 1 through 5 if necessary, until you have calmed down once again. Also, remain positive all throughout, even if it feels like the most difficult thing to do. You will find that positivity helps you from feeling as though the sky is about to fall each time. After all, a healthy and positive mind can conquer anything. More importantly, it is contagious. Spread the good will around you.
