Ways to Practice Speed Reading

This article discusses ways to practice speed reading. Come check out the tips to practice speed reading.

This is a continuation of my article Improve Your Reading Speed.  In that article, I told you about the ways to improve your reading rate.  In this article, I will give you ways I found to practice speed reading.  There are different ways to practice speed reading.  The tips to practice your speed reading are not that hard, but they do take practice.  These tips can help you read faster in a short time as long as you practice them.  Since I have done the research on speed reading, I have been practicing a lot.  I am starting to notice a change in my speed reading.  I am getting through my books and articles a little faster than before I practiced speed reading.

Here are the tips I learned while researching ways to practice speed reading:

Use your hand
With this tip, use your dominant hand on the page and slowly move it straight down the page, drawing your eyes down as you read.  You should try and keep an even, slow motion.  Your eyes and hands may not be on the same words at the same time, but this will help you read faster.  You shouldn’t start and read a little or stop and read a little.  You should keep the movement slow and easy.  You should do this motion once per page.  Since I am right-handed, I use my right hand to do this.  If you are left-handed, you should use your left hand.  This is one of the tips I use to practice speed reading.

Use a card
You can use a card or a folded piece of paper above the line you are trying to read to block the words after you read them.  Bring the card or paper down the page slowly and evenly.  Try to read the words before you cover them up.  This tip is to help you avoid reading the same lines over and over again.  Try to move the card or paper down faster than you think you can go.  Slide the card or paper down once per page.  I use an index card when I practice this tip.  This tip is helping me a lot because I used to re-read passages.  I like using an index card when I am reading books because it is big enough to fit the page.  When I am reading articles on my computer, I use a long bookmark. I turn the bookmark horizontally and I follow along.

Very practical tips. Your tips are I’m sure applicable to reading novels, pocket books, newpapers…

But I guess these are hardly applicable when reading very critical books like the law books and other books that require keen understanding and analysis…

    I’ll try these though… Thanks
