What Do You Do When Your Ears are Too Big

We all have some feature we wish we didn’t have. Some of us have long noses, others big backsides and others ears that stick out. It seems that no one gets out of this life without having something he/she doesn’t like and want to change. What happens to those who do and those who don’t? I know a couple of examples of people with prominent problems whose success is part and parcel of features that others might look at and think of as distractions to attractiveness. But to them they were part of the total personality that made remarkable achievement in spite of a loss of perfection in some solitary ways.

Barbara Streisand of the beautiful voice and funny personality stands out for lots of things. She was the whiz kid on stage, in the theatre, in the movies, on records and on television. She could sing, dance, and make jokes. She acted in funny and tragic roles, directed films and made herself both an outwardly involved creature and a silent enigma depending upon mood and occasion. Her nose stood out like no other in film, and she was often asked why she didn’t change it. The resonance of sound for singing was one reason she offered. Another came simply as something that said, why change something that gets attention, that is part of me, and that I remain attractive with in spite of the isolated opinion.

Now there’s a famous man today whose ears stick out. Comments are made by Barack Obama and on late night shows, about those ears that have become common conversation. But Barack is more than the ears, of course. Behind them seem to be not moisture but maturity, more brains than most, and a serenity that most of us would want, especially when striving for achievement under great stress, scrutiny and opinion. A President with ears that stick out could be good for America. After all, that would show the country able to get past an obvious difference and vote for what’s between those ears after all.
