What is a Friend?
This was my graduation speech from high school.
What is a friend? A friend is someone who will never leave your side even in hard times. A friend is someone who knows your inner secrets even before you tell them. A wise philosopher once said a friend is a single soul dwelling in two bodies. I think that is a friend is someone who doesn’t care what clothes you wear, the color of your skin, or the color of you hair.
It is the person on the inside that matters most, because the size a person’s heart more than makes up for other thing we tend to find wrong in a person. A wise woman once told me that friends are our past, present, and future, I like to think that without them the challenges of life would be difficult.
An anonymous poet wrote a poem that really tells the true meaning of a friend. “The day I met you, I found a friend and a friendship I pray that will never end. Your smile so sweet and so bright kept me going, when day was as dark as night. You never judged me, you understood my sorrow. Then you told me I needn’t be that way and gave me the hope of a better tomorrow. You were always there for me; I knew I could count on you. You gave me advice and encouragement whenever I didn’t know what to do.
You helped me learn to love myself; you made life seem so good. You said I can do anything I put my mind to, suddenly I knew I could. There were times when we didn’t see eye to eye and there were days when both of us cried. But even so we made it through. Our friendships haven’t yet died.
Being a friend to someone is the best gift anyone person can give to another. An Arabian Proverb once said that a friend is one to whom one may pour out all the contents of one’s heart, chaff and grain together, knowing that the gentlest of hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keeping and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.
