What Money Won’t Buy

“The love of money is the root of all evil”.

This poem by the famous Author Unknown does an excellent job of putting money into perspective:

Money will buy. . .
A bed but not sleep,
Books but not wisdom,
Food but not an appetite,
Finery but not beauty,
A house but not a home,
Medicine but not health,
Amusements but not happiness,
A ring but not a marriage,
A crucifix but not a saviour,
A church but not a heaven.

As we’ve heard, money isn’t the root of all evil, but the love of it is. It’s kind of funny to think that people will spend money they don’t have to buy things they don’t need to impress people they don’t know.

Christopher J. Hegarty, author of How to Manage Your Boss, tells the story of being at lunch with a friend who told him, “Chris, I think you have low self-esteem.”

After pausing briefly, Chris retorted, “Low self-esteem? Me? I earn money more than the U.S. President and V.P. put together. I have a home in San Francisco and an apartment in New York. I’m in charge of a large number of people, and I’m considered a leader in my industry. How could you possibly believe I have low self-esteem? You must be joking!”

Chris’ friend was now smiling broadly. “You’ve just removed any doubt I may have had.”

Chris says that this incident changed his life. Suddenly he saw his constant need to prove himself was really just compensation for his faltering self-esteem. He saw how, with every business transaction, he put his worth as a human being in the line.

It doesn’t take a lot of money to be happy and what do we want other than happiness?

Excellently done Giftarist. You have hit the nail right on the head, money is not the root of all evil; but the love of it is.

A good one. Certainly money is the root of all evil but you will wonder why the church collects some amount. Does it mean the church needs some evil to keep up itself?

Hi, can’t help; but comment in here.
Good article! But for some who does not understand…
    Money is NOT evil.
No church, I am sure, preaches that money is evil.
The bible NEVER talks about money as evil.
What the bible says is that “For the LOVE of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” 1 Timothy 6:10
The problem lies in the attitude of a person toward money and not in the money itself.
