What to Do When You Have Nothing to Do

Bored? At home, school, or during the daily subway trip?

Lets say you have had a busy week, and are planning to take the weekend to relax. Weekend comes, and somehow you aren’t all that tired. Surprisingly, you wouldn’t mind being at work right now!

Here are some ideas to spend your time:

Visit your family. It’s probably been a while since you last visited your parents, uncles, cousins, brothers or grandfathers right? Why not phone them and have lunch with them, spend the day talking about how your life has been going…

Rent a movie. You feel energetic enough to go watch a movie at the theater, with all the kids shouting or the long lines, and all the waiting and having to drive just for less than two hours of entertainment? I wouldn’t. The alternative is to go to the nearest Blockbuster and rent a classic, or a movie that will interest you as you are also killing time by checking the movies they have.

Go for a walk! Be it walking, running, riding a bike, all types of wandering around always relax people and make them see interesting things. Give it a try, maybe it will become your new hobby!

Read a book… Studies show nowadays less and less adults read. The main reason according to most researches is having “lack of time”. How great thats not your case, heh? But jokes aside, there are really good books out there nowadays. I currently am in the middle of “Chronicles of Allaryia”, have read the first four books and will read the fifth when I have the time.

Those were all good options for someone who doesn’t have what to do on a weekend. But lets say, you are on the subway, or in a waiting room! Here are short-term time killers that will really make the difference:

The old classic word chain. Look around yourself, and find an object. Then think of something related to that object. Then something related to that something. And so on. You can even do more complex things, like starting to create your own pattern (example: Thinking about an object related to the last two objects, or something related to something opposite of the last thought object – you see a plant, think of water, next thing could be fire as it opposes water)

Singing to yourself 99 bottles of beer on the wall. Its not like you haven’t done it before in the car, and it will surely make time fly. Be careful though! – If you focus on it too much, not only can you not hear your call, like you might find yourself singing it loud in a full room!

Spinning something. This is a very uncommon trick that always works for those who can. Take the metalic part of a pencil case off, and spin it over a table. See how a disk/ball seems to exist inside the spin? I personally have a friend that does that at biology classes and a variation during math: At math, he will spin his rubber, that has an arrow drawn on it. To whoever the arrow points, is a person the rubber would like to destroy (since he also wrote on it “DESTROY”). Its interesting that his rubber not once pointed at me, and has pointed at almost all other students – even its owner. I might be immune to rubbers.

And thats it, a compilation of several ideas to what to do when bored at home, school, waiting room, public transportations, or anywhere else where you see fit to practise them. Happy time-killing!

This is funny and interesting, a good bit of advice on something people generally don’t get advice on. Well written.
