This article explains some of the impacts of the no child left behind policy and gives some useful links to studies on the topic.

The no child left behind act of 2001 has been the centre of much debate in the United states, with opponents of the policy stating that, among other things, it places too much emphasis on reading and mathematics, at the expense of other, equally important subjects such as art and music.

However, the proponents of the policy have pointed to many benefits that parents and students get to have as a result of the law.

NCLB, the power of choice

A key benefit of the no child left behind (NCLB),, policy is that it gives parents the power of choice. For parents who may not, for one reason or another, be able to send their children to private school,, this is good news. Good news because they have the option to move their child from a school that persistently under performs and consequently affects their child’s academic development negatively.

NCLB, improved quality

A study done by Justine S. Hastings and Jeffrey M. Weinstein on the policy and the choice it gives to parents found that, students who changed schools for substantially better performing ones than their previous schools significantly improved their test scores by 0.17 0.19 student level standard deviations. Their findings demonstrate that the freedom of choice that the law provides parents gives them power to determine the quality of the education that their children receive.

Tied to quality, the study’s authors also point out that the threat of expanded parental choice and avoidance of regulation does much to push schools to improve student learning. This plays a major part in influencing the type of education that students receive in the classroom. Teachers are made to work harder in order to achieve positive outcomes for their students.http://www.nber.org/papers/w13009

NCLB, Benefits for disabled students

Students with disabilities also gain from NCLB, according to the National counsel for disabilities (NCD),. Their studies have shown that as a result of IDEA (Individuals with disabilities education act) and NCLB,, students with disability are being taken more seriously, more of them are graduating and fewer are leaving school. NCLB has meant that there is greater coordination between special education teachers and general educators,, resulting in more positive outcomes for persons with disabilities.

As a result of NCLB, persons with disability are now able to participate in more “mainstrim” classes, helping to raise their levels of confidence.

NCLB, weaknesses

NCLB has its weaknesses however, as highlighted in a study by Thomas S. Dee and Brian Jacob, who found that while it helped improve math skills to both fourth and eighth graders,, the policy did not have the same impact on reading. http://www.ukcpr.org/SeminarSeries/brianjacob.pdf

There is therefore justification for the policy not to be reversed, but to be mainded in order for the benefits seen in math, among students with disability and the less privileged to be felt a little stronger, and to be appreciated by a much wider section of the population.

A thought about society and views of someone who has a disability.

Right so people are always saying and thinkng that because you have a disability, you cant do anything for yourself. I have a physical disability which affects me walking. This means i can’t walk for very long and i have a possibility of collapsing.

People are always saying to me “you are strong just keep fighting”. What they don’t get it I don’t have an illness, it’s a disability! I cant fight it because im not going to win. Whatever I do it is here to stay. I hope that one day I can get a little better but then that is setting myself up for a fall. Just because im not fighting it doesn’t mean im just giving in. I am my own person and I want to find my way by myself, not others telling me what I can and can’t do. That actually makes me laugh you have a disability and people tell you this, yet they have nothing wrong with them. How do you know I cant do something until I try. Yes i do need a little extra support at time but that doesnt mean i cant work or do anything myself. Iam one of the lucky ones because there is worse things out there. For those that talk to us who have something wrong with us, please dont talk down to us as it is very offensive. To those that have an open mind thankyou .

This is the Ahn household. Dad Ahn Nae-sang, Mom Yoon Yoo-sun, mature sibling (Lee) Jong-seok, and youthful sibling Soo-jung (Krystal). Unique lot of arguing in the household, but they are a mostly sensible lot. Mom and Dad might get into a screaming go with over filthy tops, for example (as in their first scene), but a few times later they are making night time strategies with pleasant people. “Dinner at 7?” “Make it 7:30.”

Nae-sang functions a slightly effective results organization that he functions with an old companion, though he’d probably be better off without the connection. And which is even before the companion performs off with cash, bankrupting the organization and making Nae-sang in the lurch.

Jong-seok is in his last season of university, his university desires driving on his sports ability as a basketball gamer — desires that are vulnerable when the household no more has cash for university expenses. Soo-jung is one season youthful and has a particularly shut connection with Dad; they have got a father-daughter fist-and-butt-bump just for the two of them. She has been learning in LA and comes house for a separate, only to get trapped here thanks to the bankruptcy.

Yoo-sun’s two youthful bros are in their thirties and forties, single, and stay together in a relaxed house. Older sibling (Yoon) Kye-sang is a warm-hearted and careful physician who eventually left his gig at a famous medical to follow his concepts (amid a Light Structure parody, heh). He now performs with less blessed people at a community health facility, and has strategies to go work in Rwanda for some time.

Younger sibling (Seo) Ji-seok is the complete complete opposite, the essential foolish jock form, but with about multiple the regular power provide. He’s the form of guy who unintentionally hammers his thumbs, gets furious at the sort, and chooses to discipline it by working it…with another sort. So, not the cleverest light. He’s a gym trainer at an excellent, the type of guy who punishes children for violations the old-fashioned way: encased hearing and bunny trips. It’s awesome to see him as this noisy, foolhardy hothead when Seo Ji-seok just performed awesome, urbane, and uber-competent in Manny.

Your birthday is close, reminding me whate a lucky mother I am to have you!

                                                       Daughter Dear

You were born a month early, and although you were a healthy weight, your pallor was pale because you had jaundice. I found out that it was normal for 8 month babies to get this, and it wasn’t long before you became a healthy pink, and from that moment on you thrived.

You were the youngest in the family, with a 9 year gap between you and the eldest brother. You were a sunny child, very independent, and very loved, with 2 brothers and a sister, as well as your dad and myself. You were always very untidy, your bedroom was like a tip, and nothing has changed.

You were also very loyal, kind hearted, and compassionate, and you still are. I still remember the day you went to choose a kitten, Dad’s words of wisdom were. ” Bring back a big male bruiser who can take care of himself.” And because you not only had a mind of your own, but also had a kind protective nature, you chose Charley, the runt of the litter, with a nature just as feisty as yours. It proved to be a very good choice, because she lived until she was 21, enjoying a long and happy life.

The teenage years were hard for you, we didn’t always understand one another, but when you came out the other side, you were the kind loving daughter that had always been there before. When you entered your early twenties, you had the sort of heartbreak that no person of that age should have to deal with, with the loss of your much loved sister. Although 7 years your senior, she had inspired you to become a very good swimmer, and you were both extremely close. As if that wasn’t enough, less than 3 months later, you lost Dad, the man who adored you so much, and the person you most resemble in looks and character. You had to bear all this grief, and yet you supported me, and were there for me, just when I needed you. Words are not really enough to thank you for helping me to deal with the worst possible time in my life.

Like all strong willed people, you had to find your own path in life, but what an amazing route you have chosen.

Growing up with a brother with special needs wasn’t easy, and you never got my undivided attention, but as you have now chosen to work with children with special needs, I guess it didn’t faze you. I am so proud of you, your compassionate nature is put to such good use, enriching their lives, and making a difference for them, it is something that only special people can achieve, and you are undoubtedly very special.

As your 37th birthday approaches, you are still my baby, and always will be, you have a happy life that you richly deserve, and you are a wonderful mother. If your dad was here now, he would burst with pride to see you. Enjoy your life, and your birthday daughter dear, and I hope all your dreams come true.

LOVE FROM YOUR MUM XXXXXXX

Information on a non-profit organization.

Have you heard about the wonderful organization called The Arts of Life? If not, you are certainly missing out on something so special it will make your heart smile! The Arts of Life is a non-profit organization created by and for developmentally disabled adults and focuses on its artists’ needs and strives to surpass each of their own expectations. Their mission statement – per their website is, “We are people with and without disabilities creating an artistic culture to realize our full potential.” Can you feel the excitement just by reading that? Can you imagine the excitement of each of these individuals KNOWING that they are going to be a part of an organization ready and willing to share their precious talents? The Arts of Life does just that. They are willing to help the artist express their views and imagination. And what imaginations they have!

Personally, I believe the greatest wish for a developmentally disabled adult would be to succeed. We all thrive to succeed and most of us take advantage of what we are capable of. But for the developmentally disabled adult, succeeding is the ultimate trophy awarded to himself only given to those who try and try and try…it’s a constant effort for those who are challenged and The Arts of Life recognizes these challenges and then rewards them with their own expression of oneself. The environment of The Arts of Life is so incredibly supportive to further their creative visions.

The website artsoflife.org is a playful website to browse. You’ll see the many happy faces of each and every individual who is beaming with pride and happiness because they want to share their works with you. You get to meet each artist and view their creations. Each artist shares their thoughts and eventually is able to take those thoughts and draw. The creativity in these artists is boundless and each artist is unique in itself. Go ahead. Take a look at this wonderment. I bet you’ll be smiling in no time!

The Arts of Life has two locations – one in Glenview, IL and the second is in Chicago, IL. Each location boasts all of the artists and their works. It is amazing to see the variety of each and every artist – you wonder about their thoughts and you’re finally able to view and understand what the artist is saying! This might seem silly, but there is actually an art of thought and creation.

Believe it or not, there is The Arts of Life Band which is an on-going project between the disabled and non-disabled artists in the Chicago area. Their music contains a happy beat inviting those to dance around the clock! They perform at local events and fundraisers, and it is an absolute joy to listen and dance to!

So let’s get involved! Let’s see what we can do to encourage each artist and let’s see how we can help this amazing organization! There are a myriad of positions available from an archivist to a media specialist; there are positions in graphic design, art prep and exhibitions; and finally, there is the ever so popular artist assistant.

So let’s donate our time and our efforts because as the website says, “We love our volunteers (and we always need more of them to love!”)

The Arts of Life – you just can’t go wrong in becoming a volunteer with this extraordinary organization.

Having siblings in our family, for some people, it is very nice. We can share, talk, play, do anything fun with them. In the other hand, it could be so stressful as well. Let's find out whether your siblings are your friends or maybe the other way around.

Siblings are those who are our brothers or sisters. They grow up with us, come from the same womb with us. For instance, a twin brother or sister even shares the same place with us since we were just very small-living creatures. In life, they –our siblings- are those who will be around you, protect you, care about you and share, share anything they could.

Somehow, not few cases we can see that siblings are not really close to each other, not really care about what their siblings suffer, feel or burden. It’s a phenomenon, a common one. It is a choice as well, not something that just happened accidentally. Wonder why it is said as a choice? Because it is a choice to be a good sister/brother or not for all your siblings. What goes around, comes back around. It’s just as simple as that. You want them to be as close as friends are, be a good friend. But, if you don’t want to be just a simple good friend, never blame anybody if you feel you’ve never been close to your siblings. It’s you who understands them well enough as you guys were grown up together with your parents.

There are some tips that can make you close with your siblings. Check them out:

1. Always remember that they are your family too. No matter what had happened to your family, or anything happened to your parents, like divorce, dead or living apart; your siblings will always be your siblings. Those who have same family name with you. Those who have similar look with you.

2. As stated above, be a good friend to start befriending with them. As long as you are a good friend to share, to care, to be a shoulder to cry on, siblings will always trust you and depend on you. This will keep the bound among you tight.

3. Try to position yourself as their position. You might be an eldest brother or sister, you never knew how it feels to be younger or youngest brother/sister. Just once in a time, try to imagine that you are in their position, that you need more affection, you need to be cared about more than the eldest brother/sister do. By then, you will understand if your siblings act or something ridiculous for you. You will not blame them all the way. Because they have their own reasons, their own thoughts of something. After knowing all these, you might be a wiser brother/sister that can solve your siblings’ problems.

4. Keep away from selfishness, ego or stubborn. Even friends, do not like selfish friend, moreover a sibling. Once you got so ego, no one wants to be around you. Especially your siblings. If this thing has happened already. Better apologize and start over with a friendlier manner. It might be hard at first, but it’s going to have a sweet ending.

5. Blend with them. You might have your own world, your own friends out there. Of course, so they do. You might always be just with your own world or your own business. But still, your siblings are your family too. You cannot ignore them every single day. Try to spare a couple of days among the busy days in a week. Find out what they are up to, what they like the most and also what the things they dislike. Then, try to be part of their lives. As time flies, you will see that they like to be with you, especially when you are involved in their daily lives. To be there to help them and take care of them.

6. Keep in touch. Living far away and apart from home shouldn’t crake the bound of great siblings in your family. Always keep in touch with every of your sister or brother. This usually happens when siblings grew up, go to college or even get married, every of them live apart from each other. Never forget to spend long holiday season with all your siblings, anywhere you can settle the place. It will remind you how important they are for you and also heal the missing feeling deep inside you.

Happy siblings, happy family J
