Legend has it that when Napoleon’s second-in-command asked his boss if he preferred a courageous general or a brilliant general he replied: “What I want is a lucky general.”

Napoleon knew what others have noted — on a rapidly changing battlefield, there are the things you know you know, the things you know you don’t know, and the things you don’t know you don’t know. It’s in this last category that fortunes are so often made or broken.

And so it is in our careers. The big events that matter most are often those that we can least predict. You take a course in college that inspires you to change your major. You get a new job after a friend of a friend refers you to a company you’d never heard of before. You propose a process innovation that occurs to you in the shower while thinking about building a tree house for your daughter.

Serendipity is the ability to take a chance occurrence — a surprising idea, person or event — and make creative use of it. Yet serendipity can be exceedingly difficult to pull off in the midst of our busy work lives.

Why? Because we are psychologically wired to find the things that match our expectations and discount what doesn’t. For most of us, our education and work environments only reinforce this behavior. We are tunnel-visioned. Yet the benefits of having a robust peripheral vision are overwhelming. Besides being responsible for so much of our innovation, peripheral vision is how we discover new opportunities and adapt to a rapidly changing world.

Find the people that matter

In business we are often at the mercy of chance to locate the people that we should be working with. There was no matchmaking service that brought together Lennon and McCartney, Jobs and Wozniak, or Ben and Jerry. Each of these people put themselves in motion — they escaped their isolated environments or routines long enough to bump into others. Circumstance brought these personalities together, but to achieve success they had to connect, see something in each other and ultimately take the initiative in pursuing the partnership

How many collaborators, new hires and customer prospects do we miss because we aren’t looking for them when they appear in our lives? If the answer is “more than a few,” it’s a good time to develop your skill of motion.

Get out of the cubicle, and work for a few hours in the lobby, cafe or cafeteria where visitors are coming in and out all day. You might also attend local meetups or conferences, but rather than targeting other people based on where they work or their job title, avoid looking at nametags altogether. The people who seem least likely to be able to help you (e.g. that crazy guy in the tie-dye t-shirt) might just be the most helpful of all.

Use surprise events

When 29-year old Howard Schultz was sent to Milan on a business trip his bosses gave him a very focused goal — buy wholesale beans for the coffee-bean shop he worked for. Yet he found something that deeply surprised him. On every corner of the city there were espresso bars that both served amazing coffee drinks and acted as social meeting places.

He had never seen anything like it before, and he suddenly knew in his bones that this concept could be huge in America. He pitched his bosses on the idea, but they rejected him out of hand. They had no interest in becoming a “restaurant” business. Instead he pursued the idea on his own, ultimately creating the global phenomenon known as Starbucks.

Schultz was able to see beyond the task he’d been assigned and imagined a future where the coffee-bar phenomenon had transformed the entire industry. Like Schultz, we must foster our peripheral vision to rise above our to-do lists and be ready when a surprise event occurs. Dedicating time to non work-related interests helps us distance ourselves from our primary tasks. This distance allows us to make the connections across domains that lead to insights and innovations.

Solve problems based on unexpected sources

In 1979 Sir James Dyson was obsessed with the idea of building a better vacuum cleaner, but it wasn’t until he stumbled on an industrial cyclone at the local sawmill that he came up with an idea for how to solve the technical problem.

Having an overriding purpose affects how we see the world. Dyson was committed to improving on the vacuum design, and this gave him eyes to see the solution embedded in the cyclone machine. Another engineer without this obsession never would have connected the cyclone to a consumer vacuum. By developing a strong perspective we increase the likelihood we’ll run into the very things that will be most helpful to us, wherever they emerge from.

Put simply, we can learn to harness serendipity as a rigorous business practice. The most successful entrepreneurs and business generally do, allowing chance to intervene in their routinized work lives, recognizing the most promising opportunities, and taking action on them, even if they challenge their best laid plans. Or, perhaps, precisely because they challenge them.

Time is gold and our most precious treasure not to waste it with petty things. Other people may think that you are wasting your time if you sit to listen to music or walk in a museum, but you are not.

Some people will exclaim that isn’t easy at this time and age. Many like myself may be searching for a job without any good results. When one has to live on a tight budget, one cuts down on expenditure to spend in what’s only necessary, that is, rent if one hasn’t got its own place, electricity and gas bills, food and stuff.

Living on such a situation, one may think that there’s no way one can lead a happy lifestyle, obsessed as one may be to have a job to keep afloat. The days may pass quickly for such a person. This person will say that he or she has no chance to enjoy themselves. How come? Entertainment is costly, and never mind a break away.

Hold on a minute. Who says that one can’t live happily even on a tight budget and so many bills to pays up?

First of all don’t be choosy when it comes to accept a job, because on these days jobs are scarce and there are way too many of us in the work market. As long as they pay you a salary or a wages and they give you plenty of free time for yourself, it should be fine. What if one has to do one of the so called menial jobs when one has a good CV and has some expectations? I don’t envy, for instance, these high profile executives who earn a lot, but they also spend a long day at work to the extend of becoming workaholics.

If you are searching for a day job to be able to pay for your keep, do organise yourself a weekly shedule, say from Monday to Friday and from 8 to 4. As a matter of fact, searching for a job is also work and it has to be subjected to a roster. When you have completed your day’s work, switch off the computer if it happens that you are searching through the Internet. Your day’s work has finished.

Call up friends or relatives to know how they’re getting on, or to see if you can meet.

Take strolls the park if you happen to live in a city or plan a good excursion if you are in a rural environment. The contact with Nature makes us more human and it’s very uplifting.

Join in whatever social or cultural activities they are in town that might be of your likes and will help you to meet people.

Don’t envy those who can still spend their weekends in shopping malls or those who think there’s no time for leisure time.

Don’t even envy those who can flee the city for break away. You can’t, but there are still things you can do in town.

Think of what other things you’d like to do apart from working if you happen to still have a job, eat and sleep. Surely, there must be something that you always wanted to develop, but for many reasons you never put them into practice.

Stop to read a book or to listen to music.

There are just so many things to do that it seems like a crime to waste time idling about or getting bored or depressed. Our time on Earth is limited and it is in fact short one, even though, one may live up to very old age. It is gold and our most precious treasure.

What to wear for an interview - aimed mainly at young people.

As i stated in an earlier article, I have started work at a Training Provider, which is a government funded programme to help young people into work. I said I would use what I picked up to write articles so here’s the first of a little series!

DRESS CODE

In the time I’ve been there, two of our trainees have gone for interviews. One was dressed smartly, made sure her hair and make up was fine .. . .the other girl turned up in old, worn-out jeans and an equally worn-out hoody. Both girls are in the 16-17 age bracket.

So what do you wear for an interview?

I was always told to wear a business suit by the job centre and to make sure my hair was tided back and i has no make up or jewelry on. This is utter BULLSHIT. You dress for the job you are applying to.

For example if you are applying for a retail position, sure wear a suit, but don’t make it so you look like an old bag. I mean show off the fact that you are trendy! If possible wear a shirt/blouse from the store you have applied to! But remember don’t dress casual. You want to come across as a professional, but that doesn’t mean wear black and white! Spice things up a bit!

General Tips on Appearance

Nails
Yes you heard right! Make sure your nails are clean. If your nail varnish is chipped then it can make an outfit look messy. Try to avoid painting your nails colours and stick to a nice clear varnish! Also make sure your nails are filed and tidy looking.

Hair
Always make sure your hair is tidy. Especially if you have long hair. If you turn up at your interview with wind-raped hair it won’t look good. Try to arrive early so you can give your hair a quick brush before the interview takes place!

Deodorant
Always wear deodorant. I know it seems like common sense but you’d be surprised by how many folk don’t actually put it on. Personal body odours can put an employer off completely as it gives the impression you yourself are not clean!

Perfume/Aftershave
Use a teensy amount. You don’t want to knock out your interviewer. Over powering smells can also put off employers so be careful!

Make up
Try to keep it natural. If you want to add a bit of colour make sure it matches what you wear and don’t pile it on. You want to look good. . .not like a dolls face coloured in by a 3 year old.

Boobs
Girls. . .We all love to flaunt what we got but an interview is not the place to do so. If like me you are well endowed in that area make sure your blouse/shirt fits properly and is buttoned up to a respectful level! You don’t want your employer thinking you’re a slut now do you?

Jewelry
Keep to simple designs. For earrings wear little studs. Avoid wearing big in-your-face rings (you don’t want to scratch your employer when shaking their hand) and not huge bangle bracelets either. Keep to small chain bracelets and similar necklaces.

If you are unsure how to dress for the job you have applied for ask someone you know who is in the industry. If you don’t know anyone, stick to a suit and the above rules.

Oh before I forget, never wear skimpy or skin-tight clothes for interview. Always make sure you look respectable and professional. Wearing short skirts and 6 inch heels may look good in town, but not in an interview room.

Hope this was useful.

A woman Lauren Odes from Manhattan (US) has filed a lawsuit against her former employers, who has sacked her for being "too hot" at work.

A woman Lauren Odes from Manhattan (US) has filed a lawsuit against her former employers, who has sacked her for being ‘too hot’ at work.

Lauren Odes and her lawyer, celebrity attorney Gloria Allred has alleged that her bosses meted out discriminatory, profoundly humiliating and unlawful treatment to her.

“When my supervisor asked me to tape down my breasts I asked my supervisor, are you kidding?”

At a news conference on Monday, Lauren Odes and her attorney Gloria Allred, held up some of the outfits in question, all of which Odes felt were appropriate, considering she was “working in a business that is not a synagogue but is instead selling thongs with hearts placed in the female genital area and boy shorts for women that say ‘hot’ in the buttocks area,” Odes argues.

The complaint currently filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission with the allegations of gender and religious discrimination.

The voluptuous blond Lauren Odes was hired on April 24th to coordinate shipments of sample to customers and maintained that her supervisors repeatedly complained about her physical appearance and attire, even though she insists there was no dress code, as co-workers wore tank tops, and were casually dressed.

Odes claims that when she wore a short sleeve purple dress on day two of her job she was allegedly told by her conservative Orthodox Jewish employers at Native Intimates to tape down her breasts to make them smaller and on the fifth day, she wore a knee-length black dress with a shawl over it hoping to please her bosses, instead she was asked to wear a red bathrobe to cover an outfit.

“I felt ridiculous and extremely embarrassed, others in the office were laughing and asking why I was wearing it and I told them what I was told,” Odes said.

Odes took off the robe and went to buy yet another outfit that she thought would be appropriate, but instead got a phone call saying that she was fired, she feels because of the size of her breast and shape of her body.

She eventually agreed to wear a long sweater at work, but while she was shopping for the cover-up item, she received notice that she was fired.

This isn’t Allred’s first “too sexy” dismissal case. In 2010, she defended Debrahlee Lorenzana, an ex-Citibank employee who claimed her attractiveness played into her dismissal, not her work performance. Citibank denied the claim. Lorenzana’s case, settled out of court, is now closed.

The difficulties of finding summer work, financial pressures of a student.

University is out for summer; for some that means returning home to family and friends and relaxing, for some it is gaining some vital work experience or some it is travelling across the world and seeing some rare sun. For me, staying in my university city, in the hope I can find some summer work to support my next year in university. I thought this is going to be easy there should be loads of jobs for the summer, how wrong was I.

Summer work is difficult, despite employing extra staff for often the busiest time of the year makes sense, not many businesses do this, maybe because it isn’t as busy anymore or maybe because they can make do with the staff they already have.

I have a casual job for the evenings and weekends; nothing guaranteed. The worry of money is heavy on my shoulders, my course isn’t cheap and I don’t have anyone to fall back on for financial support. I want to earn, I want to work, but it seems nobody wants me.

People say student life is easy, they have lots of fun, but as the fees increase, the cost of living increases and the strains of trying to do the best you can, the emotional and financial pressures increase too.

I am not going to give up trying to find work and maybe if I can’t find work, I will make some work. I am determined to earn this summer, no matter how much work it takes, but I know the journey is not going to be easy.

Is Being Self Employed The Way to Beat The Recession?

How could this be the case?

With the current economic climate the way it is, more ad more people are choosing to work for themselves than ever before. Although it might not be easy, if you have a skill that people would be willing to pay for, it sometimes makes sense to build up your own client base as this means that you would have your own steady income and wouldn’t have to worry about being made redundant, which is a big problem in the jobs market at the moment.

The first thing that you need to take into consideration is how much money you would need to earn. If you are working as a freelancer from home, then you might not have to earn as much as you would if you were working for a company, because you wouldn’t have to pay for travel, food while you’re on shift, or work clothes. This means that you could get away with working for a little bit less as long as you have actually worked out just how much money you would need to get by and have enough for some treats in your day to day life.

The next thing that you need to think about is what you’re going to do. If you are able to paint or make arts and crafts then this is relatively easy, as all that you would have to do would be to set up an account on an online auction website and list the paintings or crafts that you have available for sale to the general public. You might find that you get an audience for your work, meaning that the same people will be buying your work time after time.

If you don’t have any skills like that, but you’re physically strong and don’t mind some good hard manual labour, then you might want to think about distributing flyers with your contact details and a list of jobs that you’re willing to do alongside the prices that you would be hoping to get for them. Things like gardening, decorating and dog walking always go down well, and if you feel as though you could offer to be a cleaner for somebody there is always the chance that somebody might want to pay you to clean parts of their house alongside other things that they might already have been paying for you to do.

If you can play a musical instrument, or if you are good at an academic subject, then you could offer your skills as a tutor to local children. Although you might not get much work unless your qualifications are very impressive, you might still get one or two pupils which would provide you with income in the long term. So, overall, if you’re willing to put in the time to find a client base, it would seem that being self employed really could be the way to go. It is a lot of hard work at the beginning, but the good news is that you are unlikely to get fired because you would never lose all of your clients at once. Certainly worth a try if you’re not sure what you should be doing in your life right now.

How to do so.

If you have a child who has just chosen to stay on at school to do their A Levels, then you must be quite proud that they have taken that choice. However, you might now also be thinking about how you can support them when they’re practically adults, but still not experienced enough to make their own decisions all of the time. This article will help you to work out how you can strike the balance without seeming too overpowering.

The first thing that you should talk about is how they’re going to organise themselves. Coursework and assignments are very much self led in sixth form, and this means that they are going to have to take the time to consider how they’re going to fit all of their work in without falling behind. You should provide a place for them to work that is away from any distractions, and make sure that they understand just how much they have to work. Most colleges recommend 5 hours per subject per week, which makes around 20 hours of extra study. 4 hours each day, keeping the weekends free for personal activities, usually works the best. If your child has free periods during college, then you have to trust that they’re using these for work if they tell you that this is the case. Sometimes, you can have two or three free periods, meaning that a lot of the work really can be done in college. The only way that sixth formers learn is by their mistakes, and they will realise that they need to put more work into their studies when they come to their first set of exams.

The next thing that you have to do is talk to them about what they would like to do when they finish their A Levels. Although it might seem strange to be talking about this now, they need to be thinking about their future, as the next couple of years will fly by for them. You should find them lots of University prospectuses, and take them on open days if they would like to go, and then you can feel as though you’re being involved in their decision. The more you are involved, the more they are likely to tell you about what they’re deciding, and that will be great for your relationship in the long term.

Although you might not think that there is much you can do to control the behaviour of your yougn adult, you should still try to encourage them not to spend too much time at parties and then not enough time studying. There is plenty of time for that at University, when it is at least legal to drink, so it is important that they get their head down and study hard so that they will be able to get into the course of their choice at the end of their A Levels. Although it is a tricky process, if you work together as a family, you should find that you are all a lot stronger for it.
