What entices the human mind to react in such a way, that it may do the unthinkable? Here are some of the most brutal, merciless and psychotic serial killers of all time.
They say murders are committed in a moment of madness, where sin and hatred overwhelm the mind, shutting out the voices of reason and consequence. Perhaps, but perhaps not, for history itself is evidence of hundreds of people that have planned, plotted and then attacked and killed – again and again and again. What do we make of such killers?
Here are some of the most famous serial killers of all time. These famous faces have inspired countless pieces of literature, have enticed film-makers and left us in awe for centuries over the cruelty that a human can inflict on another.
Jack the Ripper
Jack the Ripper is a pseudonym given to an unidentified character, credited for various murders around the White Chapel area in London (1988). The man responsible was never found, but the killings eventually stopped. He is one of the most famous serial killers of all time and had been widely publicized via both media and literature, mainly because Britain was the centre of power at that time. His victims were middle-aged prostitutes, whom he not only murdered but often mutilated, slitting their throats and surgically removing their internal organs. Jack the Ripper was also voted as the worst Briton in history in the BBC History Magazine. The movie From Hell is based on the mystery surrounding him.
John Wayne Gacy
An American businessman, a political activist and a serial killer, Gacy was often called the ‘Clown Killer’ because of the block parties he threw, where he would dress up as ‘Pogo the Clown’ entertaining friends and children. Arrested in 1978 after the disappearance of a fifteen-year-old boy Robert Piest, Gacy was convicted and then confessed to more than 33 murders, mostly young boys and men. He would sodomize the victims and then dispose of their bodies in a crawlspace under the floor of his house. On March 13, Gacy was found guilty for the murders and received a death sentence. His last words reportedly were ‘kiss my ass’ before he was executed via a lethal injection.
The Zodiac Killer
The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer responsible for various murders in the 1960s in North California. The identity of the killer still remains a mystery, although many have probed and investigated but no concrete evidence has been accumulated. The killer sent many letters to the press, including cryptograms hinting to possible evidence. The name, Zodiac Killer was also coined within these letters. Inside the letters, he takes responsibility for over 33 murders although only five have been confirmed by police officials. The Zodiac Killer left behind a sinful and chilling legacy, one that has inspired books, novels, films, documentaries and more.
