Call Me Scammed Because Scams Happen to Everyone Goodhearted

Scams come in all flavors and are committed by people who don’t like to work hard, act contrary to custom, and many times involve fraud or theft and do them because they can and sometimes because they need the money. Who is caught by a scam? Let me explain.

Ever since Jesus related the Parable of the Good Samaritan, people have taken up the cause of the Golden Rule of treating others as they would be treated, only to find that someone has taken advantage of their goodness. Many scammers think, “Well why shouldn’t I take advantage, it makes the other person feel so good, so worthy and for certain it will guarantee that the scamee will go to heaven. I am really supporting a worthy cause.” Here are some scams people encounter that I have encountered that made me react in a variety of ways that range from scratching one’s head to worrying about how to scam someone in return.

Got it Made Buys Popular Band Buddy Whatever Asked

Everyone in my chemistry class one day was caught by a scam run by one of the popular band members. Out of paper, he went from person to person asking if he could borrow some paper. His supply of paper, which he held behind his back, grew from person to person as everyone forked some over.  No one questioned what he was doing until he got to me. I asked, “what’s that behind your back?” His answer was to blush beet red and move on to the person beside me who handed some over. I said three “Hail Mary’s” for my miserliness on that one. Luckily for the shape of my soul, I improved my ability to be scammed.

Busy Bee Bushwhacked by Making Change Con

One busy day at McDonald’s I had a pile of special orders with customers waiting in a side line and a line of another ten customers when this dude pays me for his order then asks me to make change for him. Mid transaction, he manages to take the ten he has passed over to pay his bill, hands me another ten and asks for a twenty back. I scratch my head for a minute but I have people talking at me from ten different directions and only later figure out why I am short ten dollars on my bill. I bet he liked the result better than my manager did. I soon learned to complete all transactions before starting a new transaction, especially if it involved making change.
