Child Abuse: Causes and Effects, Ghana’s Side
Child abuse is a seriouse issue, especially in developing countries; here is a real life narration from Ghana.
The government has also introduced a capitation grant in all public schools to allow as many children enroll in schools, the school feeding programme (SFP) was also introduced to serve public school children at least a meal every school day.
Efforts by Organizations
At the Children Right International a non- governmental organization (NGO), the Public Relations Officer Madam Dorothy explained how children in hazardous conditions are visited by the organization. Saying “Some of the children are okay with their situation while, others complain bitterly.” They complain on how they want to attend school to learn to read and write like their peers
The NGO concentrates on children in cocoa producing areas, and is also in partnership with the ministry of Youth and Employment. This has led the ministry to send 86 children in Ashanti – Akim South District and another 104 children at Kwaoebirin district to school, including 42 others at Koraboakoltar District. This excludes children in vocational institutions in the coco producing areas. She also emphasized that “The NGO played a key role in the girl’s child education policy.” The policy has now become the 10th policy goal of the education ministry.
Mr. Kwame Menasha a programme officer at the International Programme on Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) an affiliate to the International Labour Organization (ILO). He said further that “A project to monitor abuses was on –going.” Accordingly he also said that “The program will support the Integrated National Child Labour System (CLM) and will involve active participation at district and community levels in identifying, preventing and protecting children in or at risk in the worst form of child labour.”
