Sexual desire may be natural but it is wrong to resort eve-teasing. Eve-teasing is the manifestation of seal provocation of the person. An indecent remark or| vulgar comment is the mildest form of eve-teasing, goes to the extent of physical assault and harassment. Starts with winking eyes but making obscene gesture and singing irritating songs are the general method employed by the teasers. These cause mental agony to the girls.

Eve-teasing, it is said, is the offshoot of the segregation of sexes. Boys and girls were not allowing, mixing up freely and so, their desires remained suppressed. Even now, free courtship and freedom ill having friends of opposite sex are not socially acceptably activities. So, the suppressed feelings find expression ill terms of eve-teasing. Another cause is the influence c the Western culture. The grafting of Western culture, through education, literature and cinema has tempter the younger generation to lead that type of life.

Eve-teasing, which is the off-shoot of the suppressed sexual desire, is considered to be the cause and result moral perversion of a society. Temptation to violate morality has been quite powerful.

Eve-teasing makes the life of the young girl miserable. In a crowded bus, they are pinched, nudged! Pushed and insulted. While walking on the road, they are chased and commented upon. The young lads whistle imp names them after the heroines. They not only stare at them wistfully, but also pass obscene remarks on I hem. They have to tolerate all this patiently because heir resentment may provoke physical assault. No person, however insensitive he or she may be, can tolerate all this. On the other hand, the passers-by derive vicious pleasure in seeing them embarrassed.

It is a crime, which is not taken so seriously by the police or the authorities. In a democratic State, if the weaker people are not protected, they cannot become fearless citizens. If the moral crimes are committed without having a conscience, the society would certainly degenerate.

Women are afraid to bring complaints to the notice of the police because the eve-teasers are not dealt with severely. But the action taken by the law or by the law-enforcing authorities alone cannot be enough. People’s conscience must be aroused and they should be prepared to take up this problem at the grassroots level. Women should be respected; that is what Indian culture demands.
