Gary Ridgway: The Green River Killer

Everyone in Washington State knows about the Green River Killer, but did you know he had a family, a job, and a normal life. That is, when he wasn’t killing women in his spare time.

48 counts of murders in over ten years all taking place in King County, Washington… The Green River Killer. Everyone has a signature, with Gary Ridgway, he strangled women and tossed them out like a bag of trash all over the county.

The murders began in the early 1980’s and continued through the 1990’s, although he wasn’t arrested until 2001. Even then, he was only arrested for 4 counts of murder. The only evidence the police recovered linking Ridgway to the 4 women was DNA. During his trial in 2003, he pled guilty to 48 counts of aggravated murder. Though some speculate that the over total of murders committed by Ridgway is closer to 90.

When being sentence, he was offered life in prison if he gave up locations of where he dumped the bodies. This sentenced was opposed to the death penalty.

The name “The Green River Killer” came from the usual location that police would find the bodies. They were placed in groups or clusters along the Green River that runs through the Western portion of Washington State. Around which is Seattle and Tacoma. Although, two victims have been linked to Ridgway that were found in Portland, Oregon.

Once again, the death penalty was spared. For Ridgway’s confession, details of the murders, and additional information he would avoid death and spend life in prison.
