Good Detective

How to be a Detective.

Detectives come in all shapes, sizes, abilities, and nationalities. Depending on language and location, they can be called investigators, inspectors, and sleuths. They may have names such as Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, or Miss Marple. However, these detectives do very important work; they solve crimes, and they use a wide variety of talents to do so! The accomplished detective must have the probing power of acute observation, an unerring instinct about people and their motivations, and the ability to think deductively.

The powers of observation make a good detective good because with acute senses you can pick out things that are different or unusual. A fine example of the powers of observations would be finding a footprint, fingerprint, or seeing something that nobody else saw. Powers of observation help because you could be looking around a room and happen to find a receipt from a gun store. From there you are able to track where the suspect went, and be able to get a description from the clerk or cashier.

A good instinct of how people can think will come in handy for a good detective. A keen sense of how people react to your questions can be useful in almost all situations. I always thought that if you ask someone a question and they answer with a lie, they will not make eye contact. Another way of knowing if they are not telling the truth is if you ask them a question and they don’t want to answer, switch subjects suddenly, or act violently.

Deductive thinking is a very good way of thinking. It’s kind of like the scientific method first a theory, then hypothesis, observations, and finally a conclusion. This is when the powers of observation come in there is no way you can deductively think without the powers of observation. Deductive thinking is also recollecting past experiences with what you find to catch a criminal.

This is what I think the definition of a good detective is. One that is good at noticing and observing things. One that can tell if someone is lying by what they do and what their actions are. Finally a good detective is one that can use those powers and turn them into evidence.

It is nice that you have faith in all detectives. However there are those who lie, manipulate and create tricks, to make the accused say things that are not true. Like making false confessions. Personally I have mixed feelings about them. Corruption is spread throughout the criminal justice system like a cancer. When a detective makes a mistake, the entire system covers it up. Therefore many INNOCENT people end up going to prison for crimes they did not commit. I wish it was as simple and trusting as you put it. That would be real justice. Thanks for expressing your views.
