Have I Been a Victim of Identity Theft?

by MissBerlee in Crime, January 6, 2009

If you have lost personal information about yourself or lost a purse or wallet then you could be in line to become the next victim of identity theft. This crime is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States and with more and more ways to steal your identity, it pays to be covered.

Many people will not realize that they have become a victim for a long while after their identity has been stolen and this is normally found out by a credit or debit Card Company and such other companies that call you about irregular activity on your account. By this time, it may already be too late to reduce the risks of large debts. The thief may have already withdrawn or spent vast amounts of cash that belongs to you and may have applied for other credit cards or loans and mortgages in your name.

Some people do not realize that they have become a victim of identity theft until they receive threatening letters from the companies that offer credit and loans.

This can be shocking for many people and can be potentially life destroying with families being ripped apart by disbelief. Again, it may be too late for damage limitation.

The best thing that anyone could do when they discover that documents containing information of a personal nature or items such as wallets or purses has gone missing, is to act fast. Call the credit or debit card companies and inform them that these items have disappeared. It is also a good idea to call the companies that perform credit check searches and suchlike to ensure that any unusual activity is monitored and reported back to you.

Another great idea is to inform post office services that you believe you may have become a victim of identity theft. This may seem strange but a thief will not have items purchased on your credit cards delivered to you will they? These items along with documentation of new credit cards that have been applied for in your name are likely to have been redirected by the identity thieves.

Prevention is the best cure when it comes down to identity theft and the more protected you make yourself, the more damage limitation you can ensure. Insurance is a good idea to cover you in the event of this happening and by acting fast you can make sure that the thief does not get far with your details.
