Homicide Was The Major Leagues

Nothing was clear,

he couldn’t get it through his head,

and in that he would fear

he was in homicide,

he spoke for the dead,

his job was to avenge those

lost to the world,

his job became his wife,

while he tracked down

the theft of human life,

he covered the body with a white sheet,

from head to feet,

then the young rookie sees,

he understood life’s defeat,

it goes beyond academic degrees,

in time it becomes so draining,

but it doesn’t come from books,

or any specialized training,

he was in Hell’s kitchen,

and he started to feel the heat,

because all the theory in the world

means nothing if you can’t read the street,

and somehow he knew,

that it went beyond that too,

homicide was the major leagues,

the center ring, the show,

that’s when a boy would grow,

and in that,

he knew the police and criminals

have been the natural habitat,

so he would either work hard at it,

or hang up his hat.
