How to Identify Gang Activity in Your Neighborhood
A few quick and easy tips to identify gang activity in your neighborhood, as well as identifying gang members.
Gangs use a lot of different means of communicating between each other. This being said, recognizing the different forms of communication is one of the easiest ways in identifying gang activity. Some of the main forms of communication are graffiti, specific colors, and hand signs.
Gangs use a wide variety of graffiti, called tagging, for marking their territory. They often tag right along the border of their territory, in other words, street corners, along fences and walls. Things to look for in the graffiti are numbers and letters, symbols such as pitch forks/stars, and names of people. This all indicates what specific gang tagged the area and what their intentions are. If any tagging is seen, local authorities should be notified.

Each gang has their own unique colors and hand signs. Gang members will wear their colors out in public; generally it is a combination of two colors. For example, the Latin Kings are gold and black. Also, gang members often accent one side of their body, like tilting a hat to one side, or rolling up a pant leg on one side. Gangs have specific hand signs that they hold up, flash, at each other in order to show their loyalty to the gang.
