If We Could Get Rid of Poverty, We Would Get Rid of Crime

by Kyra Nova in Crime, July 5, 2009

Do you agree with this statement?

Poverty, wealth and others are given by God. Whether poor or rich is a matter of fate.  I think, being poor is a great burden for anyone.  It makes one, nowadays, feel totally helpless, without any status in society.  The lack of money may drive one into such situations that one feels compelled to adopt, in one’s eyes, the ultimate solution – that of committing crimes.

But if poverty is wiped off from the surface of the earth, for instance, by a new law stating that everyone from 20 years till 60 years old must be employed touching a minimum basic salary at the beginning, we would then maybe get rid of crime.  The whole poor population has now enough money to shoulder their previous responsibilities.  For example, an unemployed person can now provide the basic needs of his family properly as well as luxury and the comforts of life.  He need not worry any longer about fulfilling his duties and so does not have to rob, kill or commit crimes or any social evils to obtain money.

The poor now switched from rags to riches, could leave the dark prison of illiteracy and educate themselves.  Through education, they and the children learn the importance of social values, also the bad effects of committing crime and other things.  They then start to change, to develop their manners, to become more respectable like any original rich.  They finally become disciplined in their life and their children follow the trend.  Altogether, in this world of rich people, most will have no tendency to indulge crimes for they are happy with their accommodation.

Alas! Not those only enveloped in the thick fog of poverty are criminals.  The rich also can be first-rate, dishonest people.  They have got sufficient money to run their house smoothly but yet are not satisfied.  They want money, money and money.  They are as if obsessed by it and so can do anything to possess the largest amount.  To achieve such impossibility, they start to commit crimes for support to grasp their unreachable aim.  Many fraud cases, all over the world, that have been reported have in some part the hands of a rich – although educated and high-graduated.  Some were caught in the making of false money others for murder and also in many evils.

Crime is not only associated with poverty.  There are many reasons for which people – both the poor and rich – commit crimes.  Fights and murders because of religion and cast being two of them.  Both the wealthy and poor persons join hands and commit crimes.  Others include drug-addicts, mad people….

Besides, I think that it is almost impossible to get rid of poverty.  People themselves like the idea that they are superior to the low-class people and some they make sure that the others remain poor.  On the other hand, the poor persons, lacking intelligence, remain hand in hand, leaving their fate entirely to God and not putting any effort on their side.  Thus it is obvious that poverty will continue existing and crimes will continue increasing.

Poverty is the curse of our world. When one percent of the worlds population owns 80 percent of all the wealth, the imbalance causes more problems than we can fix.
