Juvenile Delinquency: Should We Blame Parents or Society?

One of the problems facing our society today is that of juvenile delinquency. Today’s child is known to have completely deviated from the conventional institutions and values. He is no longer has regard for the elders; he is drug addict, takes delight in stealing, roams the streets and takes part in school riots. A delinquent child is not helpful to his patents. Unlike the child of yester-days who was obedient, today’s child sometimes fights his parents and even his school teachers. The question is what is responsible for juvenile problems?

One of the problems facing our society today is that of juvenile delinquency. Today’s child is known to have completely deviated from the conventional institutions and values. He is no longer  has regard  for the elders; he is drug addict, takes delight  in stealing, roams the streets and takes part in school riots. A delinquent child is not helpful to his patents. Unlike the child of yester-days who was obedient, today’s child sometimes fights his parents and even his school teachers. The question is what is responsible for juvenile problems?

Mrs. Helen Ellen, a psychologist accused parents of being responsible for juvenile ills in our society. She said it is the wrecklessness of parents that has caused it all.  Now, if we must go by this statement why should parents of reputable character have delinquent children in their families? I decided that we should have better answer from parents and experts. Mr. Dennis Howard, a father of three children said; I quite agree that parents’ inadequacies to a large extent affect the behavior of their children. In fact, some parents can commit any atrocity right in front of their children not minding the effect. “Or how can you justify a situation where a father picks another woman to his house to spend the night with, when the wife is out. Surely, he is not setting any good example for his children to follow. Some parents may contribute to the juvenile’s delinquency by tolerating his depredations and truancies or indirectly encouraging his delinquent behaviors or activities. Very often, unstable parents may tacitly sympathize with the child’s destructive activities. Or one parent may condemn the other’s disciplinary efforts and thereby confuse the child by making contradictory demands. The extent  to which the father  serves as a role -model for the  boy; the extent  to which  the boy  becomes attached  to his mother, and the extent to which  the boy  feels  that both parents  are concerned  with his welfare  may affect  his tendencies  to delinquent behavior.

Again the school system sometimes serves as a source of alienation to some youngster. The attitude of teachers, and administrators or the general atmosphere of the school may not be conducive to a child’s learning process. He may not be motivated to study or he may lack intellectual discipline for achievement. As we know, schooling is conterminous with occupational achievement. Without adequate training, some youth lack the skills to secure and hold jobs. They may eventually escape to short-run gratifications, such as truancy, liquor, drugs, and stealing.  Delinquency like all other vices is learned in a group experience. Delinquency in its predomination form- stealing is usually a group experience. That is to say, it is seldom engaged in without companionship. The delinquent group decisively influences the young person’s orientation and identity. It isolated  him  from  the conventional  community  by insisting  upon  a certain  defiance  of authority  and by  orientating  him  towards  conflict  with society  in several  ways. First,  it  imparts  predatory  and  destructive  attitudes  that conflict  with  the norms  of the  community . Secondly, it  transmits  the techniques  of truancy  and malicious mischief , that  may  pave  the way  to more  serious  crimes  such  as robbery and burglary.
