Countess Elizabeth Bathory, “The Blood Countess” was born in Hungary in 1560. Her speciality was peasant girls many of whom were lured to the castle with well paying jobs and were never seen again. According to reports, the countess and 4 accomplices were responsible for 600 murders but she was only convicted for 80. Her atrocities included beatings leading to death, freezing to death, starving, sexual abuse and mutilation. It is also said that she bathed in the blood of virgins to gain eternal youth. It was indeed the castle of horrors.

Delphine LaLaurie born in 1775, is said to have mutilated and killed aver 100 slaves. This slave mistress from hell was married three times. Her first two husbands, one of whom was a slave trader, both died within a few years of marriage. She married a doctor in 1825 and was a prominent socialite in New Orleans. Allegations of torture and abuse range from the removal and storage of genitalia, the removal of brains and sliced penises. She died in 1842.
Mary Ann Cotton was born in Sutherland England in 1832 and is known for murdering her children and husbands by poisoning them with arsenic. She reportedly killed some 3 husbands, two lovers the twelve children she bore as well as the children brought into the marriage by one husband. She would cash in on insurance payments after the deaths which led to the belief that the murders were for profit. She was hanged for her crimes on March 24, 1873.

Belle Sorenson Gunness has gone down in American history as the female bluebeard. She was born in Norway in 1859 and moved to the US in 1881. An imposing 6ft, 200 pound woman, she made a living by killing her suitors, husbands, boyfriends and children – an estimated 40 victims. Mutilation, beheading and dissecting of victims was her specialty, it is reported that she fed the remains to pigs or buried them. She disappeared after a house fire and was believed to have fled with hundreds of thousands of dollars.
