Manson Family Still Behind Bars

The Manson family is still behind bars after 40 years. None of the convicted have ever been paroled. Parole boards have cited the callousness, viciousness and calculation of the murders. Van Houton at 61 was the most likely to be paroled but she was denied last year. Patricia Krenwinkel came up for parole recently and was denied. She was accused and admitted during her trial that she chased down and stabbed Abigail Folger 28 times.

Manson Family Still Behind Bars

The Manson family is still in prison 40 years after “Helter Skelter.” Susan Atkins died last year of cancer in prison. Her crimes were so horrendous that she was refused release in order to die outside the prison system. All other members are still serving time and will never be released if its up to the murder victims families. It’s still a mystery how Charles Manson could take over the minds of these young people to such an extent. He picked young folks who were venerable and unsure of themselves and sent them out to murder and destroy lives. Nobody can explain how he controlled these minds who inflicted such damage to themselves and to society.

Former member and convicted murderer Patricia Krenwinkel 63 came up for parole this week. Krenwinkel is a gray haired, grandmotherly looking woman now. She said, “I am haunted each and every day by the unending suffering of the victims, the enormity and degree of suffering I’ve caused.” She described how she came under Charles Manson’s spell. “He sang to me and made love to me. I left everything and went with him. He seemed like the answer to my salvation. Because of him, I threw everything away.” She said her late father, during visits to her in prison helped her understand what had happened and the monster she became.

The panel dismissed everything she said. They were unable to believe that Krenwinkel could do what she did just to please Manson, and that she had no better explanation of her crimes than to say, ” I wanted him to love me.” Her claim that she was rehabilitated was met with anger from the victim’s families and the prosecutor. The nephew of the murdered Jay Sebring said, “No punishment could atone for the cold blooded murders in this case.” The Deputy District Attorney , Patrick Seqeira said, “If Krenwinkel is truly remorseful she would waive her parole hearings and accept her punishment.”

Krenwinkel was tried and convicted after she chased down and stabbed Abigail Folger 28 times at the Tate home on Aug.9,1969. She also participated in the stabbing deaths of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the following night. Both homes were desecrated with bloody writing. She was convicted along with Charles Manson, Leslie Van Houten and Atkins, Another defendant Tex Watson was convicted in a separate trial. All were sentenced to death but the 1972 outlawing of the death penalty commuted their sentence to life in prison.

For once justice is being done. Well, I believe in a death penalty for some crimes; but if justice is done they will never get out.

One member of the Manson Family did get Parole. Lynnette Fromm. Although she was convicted of trying to assassinate Ford and not of the Tate/LiBianca murders.

I will never understand how Charles Manson was able to gain control over these young people. I don’t believe in the death penalty but such people must be kept where they cannot harm another person. Even now if they were paroled, it might put the public in danger and that we can’t allow.

these people committed the most horrible of horrible crimes, still when you think about the young age and how Manson had such control over them, it seems a pity they have been in prison over 40 years. they have spent all their youth in prison and are now old. their families are gone. What could they do to have a life now anyway.

I agree that if any of them are truly sorry then they would accept the punishment instead of trying to get out.
