Minimizing the risks of identity theft when you lose your purse or wallet
Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States and it is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for millions of people worldwide. The thing is, people often misplace things such as their purse or wallet, or leave them unattended and this is one of the main causes behind identity theft.
In order to prevent large debts and other such things accompanying identity theft, you must first learn how to prevent it and this is more so the case with purses and other items. Obviously the first thing that you need to do is learn not to leave these items unattended especially around people that you do not know or trust. Where possible, leave your purse or wallet in a locked drawer or suchlike when at work, and always make sure that if they are in a handbag, that the bag is secured and closed properly.
In your purse or wallet, there should never be personal identification that can be used against you. You never know where or when you might lose these items so to prevent the risk of identity theft, keep the contents to a minimum. Never leave PIN numbers with credit or debit cards or large amounts of cash in your purse or wallet and try not to get it out in places where there is no need to. Carrying these items in your pocket makes you a prime target for pick pockets and if you do carry them round in a pocket, try to attach them to your clothing with a chain.
Try and keep the amount of cards in your purse or wallet to a bare minimum. The less cards that there are, the less likely a thief is going to be able to use them and therefore protecting you to some degree from the risks of identity theft. Another great idea is to keep a list of the contents of your purse or wallet when you get home so that you can remember exactly what cards will need to be cancelled and also help the police force with their enquiries.
To protect yourself from identity theft you need to be smart and if you regularly walk around with large amounts of cash that you show off, you are asking to me a victim, so be sensible and play it safe and you are less likely to become a victim of the fastest growing crime in the states.
