Modern Day Bank Robbers: The Geezer Bandit

The “Geezer Bandit” has robbed 9 banks in nine months in the San Diego California area. Photos from surveillance cameras depicter the suspect as a frail looking elderly man roughly 6-foot, 190-pound white male believed to be between 60 and 70 years of age.

Witnesses said the man appeared to be using oxygen and had plastic tubing running from his nose. He got away with an undisclosed amount of money. The FBI has been on the search for the “Geezer Bandit” since he was first suspected of robbing a bank in August 2009. He tends to wear a baseball cap, glasses and a sweater or blazer, and is occasionally seen with oxygen or a cane. In the latest robbery, he was also wearing latex gloves.

‘Geezer bandit’ hits 9th bank in San Diego

In a twist of irony, two Facebook fan pages are cheering the old geezer on. The old geezer now has over 500 fans rooting for him. But posts that say “I’m down with the Geez! I’m a HUGE fan of the GEEZER!!!” and “Git them banks!! they had it comin’,” are clearly cheering the bandit on.

Facebook fans believe they’re cheering on the underdog. Americans love a good underdog and the Geezer Bandit is building momentum. Carrying an oxygen tank with tubes in his nose, its hard not to root for the old geezer, if in fact he is an old geezer.

Reports are now stating that he may be using Hollywood style make-up to disguise his appearance. In other words the FBI doesn’t really have much of a clue. It looks like the old geezer is outfoxing the FBI agents.

It seems the old geezer has acquired fans since its been a long time since a bank robber of any worth has come along with such grace and style. With all the high tech gadgets used now its been hard for any good bank robbers to get much publicty except when and if they are apprehended.

The FBI claim to have a good solution rate on bank robberies of well over 50% but the old geezer has not been apprehended as of yet. What seems straight out of the FBI manual Agent Darrel Foxworth said, “Just because he’s getting this attention does not mean he is someone that should be idolized or glamorized in any way,”

He also said ,“Whatever his Facebook fans think, law enforcement describes the Geezer Bandit as armed and dangerous and not worthy of a fan club.”

“There’s a risk certain people are willing to take to rob a bank,” Special Agent Brad Bryant said. “They know there’s a camera. They know employees are trained to recognize faces. They know the police are going to respond, that the FBI is going to respond.”

“It’s a high-risk crime for the subject,” he added. “Chances are you’re going to get caught.”
