Monovelocity Drivers – A Crime Within the Law?
The purpose of this article is to spark discussion, not necessarily to portray my own views on the matter. I hope you will find it a good short read.
Have you ever been driving merrily along, obediently sticking to the speed limit when you encounter the most obnoxious of all horrors- the Monovelocity driver. You know who I mean, the driver who drives at 40miles per hour both on country roads where the limit is 60 and in towns where the limit is 30.
The problem I find is that these unspeakable road demons accelerate away from you in towns, and then by the time you have caught them in the country, all overtaking opportunities have been lost!
This leaves the average driver (who never leaves ten minutes early for his destination) two options: He can descend into a particularly vociferous rage, blaming every injustice in the world on the poor, hapless Monovelocity driver. Or he can take action and risk life and limb on an outrageous anger-fuelled overtaking manoeuvre that any motorcyclist would be proud of. In an estate car, what could possibly go wrong?
My point is- is it not dangerous, knowing that human nature leaves us constantly in a hurry (and if not a hurry, at least not relaxed to the point of being 10 minutes early all the time), to drive at such a speed? If you drive at two-thirds of the speed, your destination is one and a half times as distant. In perfect conditions on a road straight enough to put a veteran Roman road designer to shame, is it not a crime to wallow along at speeds that necessitate crazed over-taking manoeuvres?

Of course your procrastination precludes you from being 10 minutes early for anything. Not to worry – another thought provoking little article!!
