Online Love Gone Wrong: Black Widow Suspected of Serial Killings
A story in Japan about an alleged female serial killer who preyed on lonely men looking for love online is fast attracting headlines around the world.
The story reads like the plot of a Hollywood blockbuster.
At its centre is an alleged female serial killer.
She is reported to have picked her prey on account of their vulnerability.
The victims are believed to have been lonely men whose common mistake was to look for companionship on the internet.
Kanae Kijima is accused of befriending six men, stealing their money, and ultimately their lives in a manner made to look like suicide.
The body of Yoshiyuki Oide was found in his car. The cause of death was determined as carbon monoxide poisoning.
But investigators soon learned the 41-year old had been happy. In fact, he had been preparing to propose to his girlfriend, Kanae Kijima, and take her on a luxurious international vacation.
Further analysis of the case revealed other oddities.
In the days before his death Oide deposited approximately $60 000 in Kijima’s account. Traces of sleeping pills were found in his bloodstream.
Another of Kijima’s male friends, 80-year old invalid Kenzo Ando, also had traces of sleeping pills in his bloodstream when his blackened body was found in a house fire.
But police say they have video footage showing Kijima withdrawing money from Ando’s bank account on the day of his death.
The Japanese media has dubbed the story “the black widow serial killings”.
