Prison in Society

Our prison does not lie behind bars, for those who have broken the rules. The prison begins in our society and in the hearts and minds of those who think, I could never.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, society seems to desire this separation. Individuals who have found acceptance often can not find it in their hearts or their minds to connect to individuals who do not strive to conform to social expectations. These expectations often are accompanied by ridicule, indifference and even attack. Many socially acceptable individuals behave in very unacceptable ways. However, they do so within measures that keep them from falling into a totally unacceptable level. The desire to maintain ones status within a group or social standing can become almost criminal in itself. I think that we need to find a way for more individuals to play a part in society. This would increase the number of individuals who are considered acceptable. In addition to this increase we should work to have a method of reentering society. This reentry like the class room reentry would have to be acceptable to both the members who are already functioning within society as well as the individual trying to reenter society. The problem with this is that human nature has become more focused on personal achievement and self than on human conditions of acceptance and the importance and value of success for all within the social structure. People would rather pay to ignore the problem than invest their emotions or time to help prevent it. Also accountability on the members of society who break the laws and seek to be destructive is a very hard thing to measure and control. This often allows for them to victimize the people who are willing to help them reenter society.
