Rape: A Crime of Power

Is rape a crime of power and violence?

It is not a crime but a lust of power and violence. In its initial stage it might have been pure lust for pleasure but now its nothing more then power. There is no unemotional way to approach this subject as it is so comprehensive and growing day by day. Its relation with morality, class system and with religion has given it an entirely different meaning.

In Pakistan the most common from of rape is gang rape and the ratio is the highs. 77%out of 100% rape are gang rapes. In Pakistan with sadness we in form you that this from is some how justified by our system o such a grand scale that there is no coming out of it. There is little done by the government unless and until there is high level of international criticism and media involvement. These have been the rare cases where the police have been forced to take some action because of a public outcry. Normally, because of social pressure, women do not even report rape, knowing that if they do, there is every chance that they will be ostracized or be accused of zina’ themselves. In a patriarchal, backward society like Pakistan, a woman who has been raped has virtually no chance of getting married.

Women who have suffered, there is a list that can go on and on and never end The tragic story of Naseem Mai who committed suicide by drinking a bottle of pesticide in public view when the police allowed her rapist to escape and in the next village, the tribal council ordered the rape of Mukhtaran Bibi by four men. This shocking incident was carried by the media around the world, and forced the government to act. Such situations need us to rethink on the role of the panchayt’ system that not only voids justice for the victim but makes sure that their later lives is as horrible as the act of violence if not better. This is not justified by religion and not even by culture then where has it come from, it is a practice that leaves question in ones mind is this not power to weaken women it is not a way to humiliate them then what is it?. The punchayat system has killed the moral fabric of society.

Unlike other societies in ours a victim is taken as the offender somehow. She is the one who suffers the most, not just at the hands of society but at the hands of the juridical system as well, it does not support a women in her weakest of situation. This is with out a doubt the only crime in which the victim’s innocence is measured by her resistance.

The question remains is it curable because it is not reversal able. The situation it not as bad, as the media has gained strength and has the ability to maneuver the view in a positive and negative direction. So the responsibility has grown on the part of media then anyone else to highlight and bring forth what needs to be brought forth what actually needs to be brought in the lime light.
