John Lennon was gunned down near his New York apartment thirty years ago in 1980, by a deranged Beatle fan, John Lennon was 40 years old at the time of his death. John Lennon co-wrote virtually all the Beatles songs with Paul McCartney.
Among his many awards, John Lennon was also recognized as one of the most influential musicians in the 20th century with a music catalog that includes mega hits like Imagine and Woman.
John Lennon was born October 9, 1940 and would have turn seventy years old today. The former Beatle will join William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill in the Royal Mint series.
The £5($8.00) John Lennon coin will sale for around £44.99($71.00). The Lennon estate will receive one off 24-carat version of the coin.
Other names that were in the running to have a commemorative coin in their honor were, Jane Austin and John Logie Baird.
To ensure that Legend would come out on top his fans launched a major campaign on facebook and twitter over 90% of the vote went to John Lennon.
A visual for the fallen legend will be held at Strawberry Fields in Central Park today.
