Self Defense is Illegal in Florida
A summary of a rather ridiculous law.
Here in Florida, it is illegal to defend yourself. I’m serious. Technically, it is legal to defend yourself when there is no chance of escape, except by force, but when it gets right down to it, by the time that happens, you will die, or be seriously injured.
Let’s say I walked down to the seven eleven, about twenty minutes from my house. At any time, someone could attack me with a knife, rob me of all my money, then kill me, and without fear of getting hurt as long as he makes sure that I have the ability to escape. Legally anyway. Personally, I would stab him and just go to jail.
While I am not sure if this is a widespread law, as I have been here in Florida all my life, I have heard references to similar laws being in place else where.
As I understand it, a self defense attack that violates the “flight or fight” law, is punishable the same as an unprovoked assault, murder, or attempted murder, depending on what happens while you are defending yourself.
Just some food for thought.

I thought they passed a law in Florida in recent years stating you do not have to retreat at all and that you can stand your ground and meet force with force as long as you’re in a place where you have a right to be.

Yes, though it is not in effect anymore. It has been replaced with the fight or flight law. I need to revise what i said earlier. Minimal force is acceptable, such as pushing someone off of you, but no punching, picking, stabbing, shooting, grappling, ect. unless there is no way to escape.
