Sexual Predators

Sexual predators have been prohibited from living anywhere within 2,500 feet of where children congregate in Florida.

In Miami Florida under the Julia Tuttle Causeway a bruise rests on the landscape. A blot that reeks of feces and urine, with shacks of plywood, camper shells, tents, and anything that can be used for shelter. They straggle out in all directions. There is no water, electricity, and certainly no toilet facilities. The inhabitants use shopping bags as make shift toilets and throw them in piles of trash to be burned. They fish the shoreline and cook the fish over campfires. Sometimes they become so desperate they commit suicide.

These people are sexual predators and the entire city after 10:pm is off limits to them. The ordinance stipulates they stay away from the city between 10:pm and 6:am. After that they can stand in front of the school all day if they want to. While the kids are in bed asleep the predators are under the bridge, but when the kids are out and about so are the predators. This same scene plays out all across the country as laws have restricted residency of sex offenders in recent years.

In Iowa thousands of men and women have been left without a home and they fill the cheap motels and streets around Des Moines. In N.Y. City a trailer moves around picking up sexual predators until it finely settles on the grounds of the county jail. ” This well intentioned policy is making the public less safe.” said Susan Brown-McBribe, chair of he California Sex Offender Management Board. “It destabilizes offenders, making them homeless.” Even supporters are having misgivings after having seen the chaos.

Florida state Sen. Dan Gelber, whose district is home to the Julia Tuttle camp, is strictly for enforcing the law. He recently learned that a registered sex offender who lived six doors down from him was arrested for masturbating in front of children. In spite of this, Gelber was horrified when he visited the camp under the bridge. “There has to be another way.” He said.

Ron Book, one of Florida’s most powerful lobbyists worked tirelessly to get ordinances passed to keep sex offenders 2,500 ft. away from places where children congregate, like schools, parks, and playgrounds. His relentlessness was due to the fact that his own daughter had been sexually abused, beaten, and defecated on by her nanny, Waldina Flores, in his own home, under his own unsuspecting eyes. His eleven year old daughter was too ashamed to tell her parents until the nanny threatened to kill someone. Book was so enraged he wanted to kill the woman, instead he turned his rage into getting the sex offenders 2,500 feet law passed.

His daughter, Lauren, after several years of counseling has progressed well. She travels with her dad to meetings, and after her father speaks, Lauren tells about her ordeal. Lauren said, “I have always come from a different place because I have more empathy, even with what Waldy did, I don’t hate her. Something happened in her life that made her who she became.” Book, due to his daughters urging is trying to find homes for the sex offenders under the bridge, especially the young first offenders. To date there has been no reduction in the number of reported sex crimes after the restrictions took effect.

The law is working well in central Florida. Shelters are available outside the restricted area for those who cannot find other residency. Sexual predators cannot be rehabiltated. They must be kept away from children.

I totally agree with Ken, our children have to be protected from sexual predators . I don’t know if we have anything like this in the UK, in principle it seems a very good idea.

Well written and informative piece. Thank you.

Child abuse needs to be stopped. We need to educate adults AND children in what warning signs to look out for. My children have been victim too. Sexual predators can ‘groom’ parents just as well as do children. They are very clever at covering their tracks.

Educating all in what to look out for, and the importance of coming forward is the only way to stop child abuse, and any other kind of abuse for that matter.

The sooner it is stopped, the less likely the abused is to go on to become an abuser themselves, which unfortunately is all too often the case, and the abuse perpetuates through the generations.

This is actually scary, being a father of 4, worrying where these people (sick people) are in relation to my kids, knowing where my kids are all the time. I wish something better could be done for them, but yet worry about the children more. Very well written, however and enlightening. Michael

I have to agree with Ken, these people can not be rehabed and we have to keep our children safe. It is sad when it happens right under our noses. When my son was a little boy he was having problems with constipation. We found out his babysitter told him that was nasty and he could not do that in her house. I reported her and she lost her daycare center. We have to be so careful.

What is the answer to sexual predators? research shows that by the time they are caught they generally have at least ten to twenty prior victims. I think sexual violation of a child should carry a life with out parole sentence because when they’re finally caught they more then likely have a trail of victims and will continue to harm our kids when let out of prison.

Nasty situation! Children MUST be protected at all cost, but the thought of having these offenders building their own ‘community’ is equally disturbing to me! I have no idea what the answer is.

in reading the comments I see two very important issues that needs to be face.

    1. One said will we ever be able to stop thinking about this needless crime.
My answer is I hope we never fget to think about it and keep other safe most secially the children.

    2. Anoter said ” I don’t understand why men would do this to innocent kids.

It’s not only men it’s also woman, moms, dads, brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents. A preditor has no special sex religon or race. It’s a sickness and Ken it right you can’t reform them, just ask one.

tHE MAIN THING IS TO TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN AND SO ON… Always make sure they knows it’s ok to tell and no one will get hurt if they tell. It’stime that communities stgart raising families again .

wonderful piece thanks for bringing this to the forefront where it should be.

Very good article Ruby! I agree that children do need to be protected. In New Jersey, there’s Meghan’s Law, and sex offenders can move in to neighborhoods with children, but the town is supposed to know up front that the people are sex offenders. I don’t think they should be in the area at all.

Thank you my friends, I can’t think of anything worse than a sexual predator. I don’t know what can be done to prevent it. As someone said, it’s usually a neighbor, friend, or a member of the family. I believe most children are ashamed and afraid they won’t be believed. Especially when it’s a trusted member of the family or their minister. We should talk to our children and tell them they can always come to us, but as in Lauren’s case they often will not. If you check how many registered predators are in your area you will find it hard to believe and there are many more who have not registered. I don’t believe we can keep them all locked up forever.

These sexual offenders are pathetic and disturbing people. It disgusts me to even think that there are people in this world that spend their time doing such things. What a disturbance to humanity! I can only agree with any and every way possible to rid the world of these filthy minded sexual offenders. Very good article. Although, I would like to see harsher punishment. Honestly, I would shoot on sight ….
