Somali Pirates Out of Control

Somalia has seen the biggest growth in piracy over the last six months because of ordinary people watching other people in their villages taking over ships and bringing them into Somali waters.

I asked my self why don’t they just don’t bring the ships the other way around and found that the companies bringing goods and supplies are not willing to travel around the world to just get down to southern Africa or Australia or to or from China. Most of the worlds food comes through here and simply wouldn’t be fresh if it were to go the long way around adding months onto the journey’s.

The threat of military intervention wasn’t even considered this time last year February 20 2007 because there was enough conflict happening in the country in the south and to add to it would just be seen as a non option and unthinkable by the United Nations. But in recent times because the population of these pirates has expanded by over a hundred fold on the numbers last year and they are starting to shoot at the ships that refuse to stop and let them aboard because they only got the one ship and they cant go back empty handed. If they do go back empty handed they could have to wait up to a year for their next chance to earn money, the pirates know this and will do anything they have to bring the ship to a halt.

It is the simple logic behind this that has led to the violence there are just to many of the pirates to just let a ship go by the attacks and hi jacks have intensified because there are simply more bodies to take on more jobs in any business its all about expansion and that’s exactly what the pirates are doing.

Steve, great writing and investigation. My theory was a little different, but I didn’t know the Yemen part of the story. But please let me add something…..
It costs millions of dollars daily to maintain and operate military ships,I believe that is a big reason these small countries have not asked for the United States or other countries militaries to help. The only time I have heard of foiling these pirates was when an Egyptian or other military ship just happened to be passing through those waters at that time.
