Some of The Consequences of Identity Theft

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in many developed countries. The consequences of becoming a victim could be more far-reaching than you imagine. Avoidance is the best policy.

Nobody should live in fear of identity theft. Even so, it makes sense to take some sensible precautions to reduce the risk of this occurring to you.

As far as financial liability is concerned, this will be determined to a certain extent on where you live and who you bank with but, just as long as you behave in a responsible manner, don’t give your personal information away and report any unusual transactions immediately once you notice them, your own personal liability will be limited. That is very comforting to know of course – but there are considerations over and above the financial impact of identity fraud

Sorting out the whole sorry mess after it has come to light can take you a considerable amount of time. In general, the greater the length of time for which the fraud has been running prior to detection, the more time it will take to clear things up afterwards. There will be a great deal of bureaucracy, a mountain of forms to fill in and many officials to speak to. Clearly you will need to talk with the police – but you will also need to get in touch with your bank and credit card companies in order to cancel existing accounts and arrange for the issue of replacement cards.

It can take a long time, and you may well feel like you are being passed from pillar to post as you sort out details with a variety of different companies and departments. A lot of people find that they even need to take time off their work so as to straighten out their identity fraud problems. It can be a very time consuming and frustrating process.

As annoying and inconvenient as that may be, there are a number of even more worrying potential consequences. For many people, what would be even worse than the thought of financial loss, would surely be the consequences of someone taking part in criminal activity whilst using their stolen identity. For example, someone convicted of causing a serious traffic accident whilst using someone else’s driving licence could cause major problems for the real licence holder.

It’s a horrible thought. As with financial irregularities, you do have some protection and can, quite reasonably, expect the whole mess to be cleared up – eventually. However, just as with financial fraud, it may take some time to sort everything out. Whilst you are waiting for the real facts to be established, you could well be in for an extremely stressful time.

Another area which is becoming more and more of a problem is medical identity theft. Criminals obtain free medical services using stolen identities. One of the main problems with this is the fact that you may completely unaware that it has happened – until you are subsequently denied medical treatment to which you are entitled. Once again, you can probably expect things to be cleared up – once again, eventually. Unfortunately, this will take time and, dependant upon the kind of medical treatment that you’re waiting for, that might be unpleasant, inconvenient and uncomfortable for you.

There are a numerous different precautions which you can take to either avoid identity theft, or to minimize the impact of it, including identity theft insurance. Not all insurance policies are identical, different policies will provide different levels of cover, so be sure to choose one that meets your needs. Even without identity fraud insurance – your liability is limited as long as you behave responsibly.

But, as with so many other areas in life, prevention is invariably better than cure. Take some common sense precautions to avoid identity theft and the worry and stress that accompanies it altogether.
