Sometimes When You Make Fun of Others You Just Look Like Carol Burnett

When people make fun of other people they set themselves up to have all of their flaws made fun of. If you feel the urge to make fun of others make sure you look in the mirror first to see if there is something that people could use to make fun of you. Guess what? There always is.

A few years ago my friend Anton and I were recording a lot of music. This was done at my house and we worked for hours and hours on our compositions. We would break between takes and sometimes on these breaks one or both of us would take a walk down to the local party store (what some of you might call a corner shop) for snacks. Around this time Anton made it his habit to pull his socks up over the bottom of his pant legs. Yes this did look a bit strange and did not go unnoticed by others.

One time when he came back from this party store and told me of a brief adventure that happened on that particular trip. It seems that a group of teenagers were hanging out outside of the party store that night and poking fun at people as they passed by. Anton’s socks were a prime target for their derogatory comments. There was, however a bit of a kink in their plan to degrade Anton as he passed by. That kink being that Anton would talk back to them. It seems that he got a least two of the girls in the group on his side with the idea that pulling one’s socks over their pants legs was fashionable. He seemed to defuse the situation with a bit of humor and most of the teens came around except one boy.

It would have been in this boy’s best interest to come around and stop being a jerk. His continuing to be a jerk prompted Anton to let him have it with a very potent verbal attack directed towards the young lad’s physical appearance. That verbal attack was “ So dude, you look like Carol Burnett!” to which the other teens broke into hysterical laughter and exclaimed to their friend “Dude, dude, you do look like Carol Burnett!”.

Carol Burnett is a fine comedian, however she is not someone that a teenage boy wants to look like. The moral of this story is that if you pick at the flaws of others, either those physical or chosen flaws, you just might come off looking like Carol Burnett when you are really a teenage boy. Which is not a good thing. Make no mistake about it everyone has something that can be picked at by others, even you!

a very interesting read with an important moral at the end for everyone. i competely agree with you, Mark, 100%. life is so short and we should make use of this time concentrating on our own weak areas and improving ourselves. no one has the right to point the finger at anyone. we are all the same and equal. looks are superficial and everyone’s fades with the passing of time. what remains is what we are underneath. thanks for the lovely share. :)
