Talking Heads

What do the so-called "talking heads" who appear on various current event shows really contribute?

I am interested in following current events, especially of a criminal nature so I watch a lot of cable shows that cover said events. That would include Hln Prime News with Mike Galanos, Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell and Nancy Grace. Out of all those shows my favorite is Mike Galanos because he has a very fair-minded approach to the stories he covers and he gives both sides of every issue a chance to be heard. I am not crazy about Jane or Nancy because I find both of them to be rather grating and difficult to listen too, but; they air the material I am interested in so I overlook the annoying aspects of their personalities.

On all of the above mentioned shows there are panels of talking heads to give opinions, offer insight and report the latest news concerning the various cases being discussed. I find little fault with the reporters of fact since they are simply doing their job and updating everyone as to the most current news and information. There are several categories of talking heads that appear on these shows and they are as follows:

1.) Psychologists and/or Psychiatrists

2.) Lawyers

3.) Profiliers who evaluate the characters involved in the stories being covered

4.) Editors and reporters from various tabloid-like publications

5.) Former and/or current members of law enforcement

6.) Misc. speakers from various professions not mentioned above

Many times I find that the individuals who represent the above categories are totally useless in supplying me with accurate information and appear to be playing a part.

An example would be a woman named Pat Brown who claims to be a Profiler. She tends to give blanket assessments without possessing all of the necessary facts and even stated that in the case of the recently murdered Yale student, Annie Le, the suspect arrested for her murder may have viewed her “wedding pictures” prior to killing her. Considering that he killed her five days before her wedding and her body was found a few hours before her wedding was to take place, I am wondering what wedding pictures he was looking at. She also claims that almost EVERY single person of interest/suspect is a sociopathic personality which is ridiculous. Many crimes are committed by individuals who do not possess psychopathic tendancies but suffer from other personality disorders and mental problems. A sociopath  can be quite easily distinquised from other types of killers and not everyone who kills or harms another is suffering from that very serious and incuable disorder.
