The Menace of Drug Trafficking in The Society
In this article, the the issue of Drug trafficking in the society is examined, from the perspective of the causes and consequences.
THE MENACE OF DRUG TRAFFICKING IN THE SOCIETY
One of the menaces in the society today is the issue of drugs trafficking by youths and adults. It is a situation where dangerous drugs like Cocaine, Heroine, Indian hemps and a host of others are transported from one place to another in order to earn huge amount of money. Drug trafficking is caused by several factors, one of these being poverty. Many of those involved in it are the less priviledge in the society who find it difficult to afford their basic needs. They are thus easily wooed by the ‘power brokers’ as agents for the illicit business.
Issue of unemployment of outputs of educational institutions is also encouraging it. Ordinarily, a graduate supposed to be engaged in meaningful job after training to display his / her skill and earn money to meet his / her basic needs. However, when there is no job for a graduate, this can push him / her to drugs’ trafficking since Devil usually find work for idle hand and an idle mind is Devil’s workshop. In many countries of the world today, particularly in Africa, it is easier for Carmel to pass through the eye of needle than for graduate of educational institution securing job. Many unemployed youths out of frustration and determination to make ends meet are involved in drug business.
The idea of ‘get rich quick’ in the society also accounts for the increasing cases of drugs’ trafficking. Many youths are now eager and desperate to make quick money. This is not helped by the way and manner in which the wealthy individuals are worshipped and celebrated in the society notwithstanding the source (s) of their wealth.
Inability of those in position of authority, particularly the law enforcement agents to apprehend the drug traffickers further encourages it. Many of those involved in the business have ‘god fathers’ who often release them anytime they are caught. In some cases, the law enforcement agents are ‘settled’ to allow easy passage at the international Airport. The inability to impose stiff penalty on those caught in the act thus encourages the youths to indulge in it.
Drug trafficking has negative consequences. It lowers the status of country (ies) whose citizens engage in it. Today, countries involved in drugs business are treated as ‘pariah’ among other countries in the world. In most cases, those caught in the act are tried and sentenced to death thus depopulating the society. Many of those involved in it die untimely because of the injury (ies) when the drugs are stored inside their bodies. It corrupts the youths thus encouraging moral decadence in the society.
