The Real Cost of Crime
About my concerns and the facts behind these concerns while I was crossing a crime site. We usually ignore the facts but they are there for us to study and get lesson. If only we were to control crime, half of our taxes can be done with and the society would be a lot better place to live in.
There might have been lots of fights between the less trusting relationships and may be reaching in time was the last chance for some one. Social costs are normally not measurable and the impact is only felt over the time.
I could also witness a substantial presence of police force and related vehicles all over the area. If the sad incident had not transpired, they would have been busy focusing on other areas and not just standing there ensuring that people don’t trespass into the ribboned area.
I reached home one hour delayed, more exhausted, saddened and distressed, an hour deleted from my life. The next day I had to pass the same route, to work, and I could see that the road was open but a fleet of crime busting professionals was swarming the area, yet another economic burden to the tax payer.
I read that day in the paper that a man was stabbed through the heart while standing on the bus stop, by a bunch of anti social elements, on his way to see his newly born child for the first time. His wife was in hospital after the birth and this was his 5th child from different women.
Even sad to read was that his 3 year old daughter was with him while he was stabbed. The trauma of that child and the people standing around is not something I can comprehend or describe.
The suffering of this wife, waiting for ever now, and the new born, never able to feel his father! And then the children from other partners, what about them? And his parents, friends, relatives; all going through the same pain! And the young one, will she ever be able to forget? And what about the by passers and the people standing alongside, waiting for the same bus! I don’t know the cost of this to their lives.
All this could have been avoided if the parents of those uncontrolled yobs had spent a little time grooming their children and giving them a proper reason to live and value life. It is the cost of that time that we all were bearing today. A stitch in time saves nine!
The ones responsible for the stabbing were arrested a few days later and a case is being built against them. But they might be out in a few years because of the laws influenced by the human rights. But is that few years the comparable punishment they have done not only to that man, but to the society as a whole?
All this is the cost of life, cost of just one life, which may be nominal to some and indispensable to others.
