Tunnel Vision: Is It a Symptom of Blind Ambition?
A look at one case where justice was blind without a doubt.

So what did the police have to make them think that Jeffery was the killer? The only proof that they had was that Jeffery was weird, a different kid than the normal one. It was said there were no witnesses to the crime, but they didn’t look very hard to find that there were. They were now in the grasp of tunnel vision that would take Jeffery right to jail. The police had one more thing that would stand up in court. They had a confession. This was obtained after eight hours of tortuous good cop bad cop until Jeffery was on the floor crying curled up in a ball, saying yes he had done it. There was no taped interviews or at least very little. The only recordings were those that would help put him away.

Jeffery was took to trial and with all of them suffering from tunnel vision it didn’t take the jury long to send Jeffery away for life. Jeffery spent 16 years imprisoned before anyone would take up the fight and demand that his case be reviewed by a panel of men. During these years it was requested that the DNA that was found on the girl be run through a DNA data base but it was refused.

Finally after all the years this boy spent in jail they finally ran the DNA and found out that Angela’s killer was in jail already serving a sentence for a unrelated murder. When this came to light everyone that had anything to do with Jeffery’s case had an excuse for what happened but it was so blatantly obvious that there was no excuse for what happened to this boy. In a case like this there is certainly enough blame to go around as one of the prosecution lawyers who had advanced to District Attorney tried to say, to the people, that she had put away more bad ones than good. This does not justify what happened in this case.

In my opinion tunnel vision has its own profile and that is it’s a symptom of blind ambition. They had their man and all of them went out of their way to prove Jeffery guilty while none of them took the time to prove his innocents. This is a justice of a third world country not the justice we expect in North America.
This shows in the case of the Druggan boys, that were imprisoned for murder. They had a reputation of causing petty trouble and were the most likely suspects when these murders took place. The police were blinded by tunnel vision and didn’t look elsewhere for answers, they had their men. These boys were finally released after serving many years in jail and the government of the Province of Newfoundland has apologized for the years that were stolen from them. After spending many years in jail it has finally been proven that they had nothing to do with the murders. One of the victims was the mother of these boys and the other was the wife of one of the boys.

We all realize that our justice system is there for us and they do send the ones responsible to jail for any crimes committed, in fact in most cases, the accused murderer has more rights than the family of the victim and their guilt is proven beyond a doubt but when there is blatant ignorance of proof that is ignored to cause an innocent person to have to spend even one night in jail, it is too much. Tunnel vision must be stopped and cases should be judged, on conviction without doubt, not the farce that this poor boy went through and so many more like him. This should not happen anywhere in the world just to further someone career.

It’s true. Justice sounds fulfilling if it is given to the right people but sad to admit that most are sentenced due to false accusation.

I applaud your article, which cuts right to the heart of this situation. I have seen how the innocent who are accused falsely and jailed, are adversely affected. How do these tunnel vision legal professionals justify the social stigmas a person who has spent prison time carries with them all their lives?
A really sad situation. Thank you for a great article.
