It all started Dec. 20, 1968 with the startling, gruesome, and senseless murders of two teenagers, Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday. In a gravel parking lot on Lake Herman Road just outside Vallejo, CA the couple was enjoying an evening at Lover’s Lane when a man approached Faraday’s station wagon and opened fire on the unsuspecting pair.

In a letter mailed on July 31, 1969 to the Vallejo Times-Herald a man took credit for the murders. He didn’t refer to himself by the name Zodiac until Aug, 4, 1969 in another letter this time sent to the San Francisco Chronicle. In the hearts and minds of the American public the Zodiac killer was another of many new and grizzly realities of the 1960’s. All in all there were seven definite victims and at least five more possible victims.

The two strongest suspects are Arthur Leigh Allen and Rick Marshall. DNA evidence from the infamous Zodiac letter ruled out Allen as a suspect. Unless he had an accomplice which, is also unproven. Rick Marshall has never been ruled out as possibly being the Zodiac. At last report in 2001 he was in poor health. There are numerous details that point to Marshall. He is the only suspect that matches the famous composite sketch. He lived in Riverside, CA at the same time of a 1966 murder of Cheri Jo Bates at Riverside Community College. Her murder has long been though t to be the work of the Zodiac. He lived in San Francisco just within a few miles of the only San Francisco murder location that of taxi driver, Paul Stine. He had an obsession with old movies and a close connection with movie related clues that appeared in the Zodiac letters.

The only real question here is why the Zodiac stopped. There are many unanswered questions in the Zodiac investigation, but the biggest question remains. Why would such a successful serial killer just stop cold in 1974? That was the year of the last Zodiac letter dated, July 8, 1974. The last known murder was Paul Stine on Oct. 11, 1969. The Zodiac could’ve died anonymously before being detected by police. Maybe he never stopped because he never really existed in the first place. Conspiracy theories could be put forth. One might be that it was a government project used to paralyze San Francisco, Los Angeles, and the entire state of California with fear in an attempt to get some kind of control over the hippie movement and various other anti-government activities going on during the 1960’s.

Another theory could involve author, Robert Graysmith who was a political cartoonist at the San Francisco Chronicle in the late 1960’s when the murders began. It’s possible Graysmith wrote the infamous letters himself in order to write a book about the case at a later date. Anything is possible when it comes to this unsolved case. In the search for answer all that is revealed is more questions. The Zodiac case continues to fascinate the public. The following is a link list to popular websites about the Zodiac murders which, include police reports, bios of the suspects, information on all the different murders, and various Zodiac information.
