And Now The Right to Die

Human rights are giving us a lot of rights these days but the only right they are unable to provide is the right to coexist with another human. As the fight for human rights keep on growing, so does the isolation of the society.

It seems to be that the only facet that is developing in this recession plagued world of today is the ‘HUMAN RIGHTS’ aspect. With the crumbling economical, social and political state of affairs, shouldn’t I feel amused to witness sings of sustained development? The final moments of Craig Ewert, who opted to end his life through assisted suicide because he could not bear with his acutely diseased life, were aired in a documentary on a British TV imparting a glamorized message to nations that suicide is a right option if one is not able to spend their life as desired.

The broadcasting of the documentary was timed well to coincide with an announcement of the Director of public prosecutions, Keir Starmer, that the family of a paralyzed rugby player, Daniel James, who helped him in his assisted suicide, will not face legal charges in UK because “bringing charges under the Suicide Act would not be in the public interest”.

Today’s already depressed and dishearten youth will readily grasp this concept which, I feel, may now have been inculcated in their minds via the media. Was it such a necessity to air this whole traumatized episode and to sell the pain of an individual and a family in despair? While much is being said on the politically charged subject of suicide, this act may be a possible attempt towards tilting the public opinion in favour of legalizing assisted suicide in the UK as well.

There are a lot of issues facing UK at the present day that are NOT in the ‘public interest’, but not much voice is heard on all this. These do certainly include the increased crime rate, the widespread lawlessness, the deteriorating social values, disintegration of the social norms, rising extremism and racism, knife and gang crimes, just to name a few. The right to die might be the new agenda on the Human Rights watch group. Trend setters have a huge burden on their shoulders regarding all their acts because the society does replicate it by referring to them in context or out of context. The first porn film, the first lesbian relationship, the first gay marriage, all have set a trend in the society which later on paved their way to them being legalized, thanks to the effective campaigning of the human rights society.

The human rights campaigners would certainly love to take up the case of the ones who want to legalize suicide by labeling it as a basic human right. The human rights charter of UNO may also be amended accordingly in time to reflect this new development. First the humans wanted a right to live and now it seems apparent that they seek forward to attain the right to die as well.

Is birth and death not supposed to be the sole virtue of Allah? On one hand science is working to realize the fake dreams of human immortality while on the other, humans are seeking their right to die to end their ongoing unbearable suffering. Should this contradiction not be considered a signal from nature warning not to interfere with its processes? Death is a fact of life and every “NAFS” has to taste it. Every thing is bound to perish and nothing is sustainable except Allah.

The youth of today are already facing the most depressing circumstances of all times. The spark of life that is supposed to be in their eyes is substantially absent and the increased use of drugs, alcohol and other intoxicants is a crystal clear indication of this. At times when material achievements are being regarded as the only barometer of human success and while humanity and sociality is suffering on the hands of human rights activists, legal suicide may be a tempting new hope of deliverance for them.

Suicide, now, shouldn’t be something illegal anymore when organizations like Dignitas are operating legally. It is only a matter of time while we wait for the day when the age limit for suicide will be set at 18+.The golden phrase ‘survival of the fittest’ should now be adjusted to ‘HUMAN RIGHTS OF THE FITTEST’ to align it with the modern civilized society like all the biblical laws have been dealt with. It only costs 3,000 pounds for an assisted suicide while the cost of living is many times more. That is definitely a cheap deal, ain’t it?
