Suicide in The United States

Suicide is the most heartbreaking thing that can happen to a family. Suicide is on the rise in the United States. Middle aged white males are killing themselves at an unheard of rate. It could be because of the economy. Numbers are climbing for jobless men. Men more than women feel the responsibility of supporting the family. When they can’t do that anymore, they feel worthless and life can become unmanageable.

The number of middle aged white males committing suicide is becoming extremely high. Suicide has moved from the 11th to the 10th leading cause of death in the country. That tells us that something is seriously wrong. the average suicide is a white male. White males kill themselves more often than African American men, and women of any race. Black African American men having a sense of belonging in the family and their religion might account for their low rate of suicide. Men are hit harder by losing a job and being unable to provide for the family, sometimes death appears to be the only way out.

There were over 36,035 suicides in 2008 compared to 34,598 in 2007. Today suicide accounts for 100 deaths every day in the U.S.. 90% of those who commit suicide have an underlying mental illness, such as depression, bipolar disorder or anxiety. The warning signs are:

Making preparations such as putting personal affairs in order.

Changes in personality or appearance.

A recent trauma or crisis such as divorce or job loss.

Withdrawal from friends and family.

Dangerous or harmful behavior such a unsafe sex, increased use of alcohol or drugs.

A sense of hopelessness that life isn’t worth living.

Society changes, life is tougher. Many people are having a lot of stress. It’s sad that some of them can’t endure and commit suicide.

The suicide rate in the district of Gunung Kidul, Indonesia, is also quite high. Partly due to poverty, and diseases that do not heal. I think, society’s mental must be repaired to prevent the increasing number of suicides.

Still, family is the basic foundation of the society who maintains the personality of its circle, who behaves accordingly in the society, community, and country. Thus, culture is being developed through the interaction of good families.

This is very serious thing. Some people are born unexpectedly, this may cause suicidal action when they grow up.
