Disability: Yes or No?
Who is to say what conditions can actually qualify you for Disability. Should be be short term, long term, or even permanent.
In the old days it seemed like it was only allowed if you lost an arm, leg, sight, or in wheelchair, more major problems like these. But now days, there is so many more illnesses that are considered a disability. You can have loss of limb, sight, wheelchair bound, but you can also have Major depression, There are even new illness not listed in the books as of yet like Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, and many others. But then again, at the same time, they say that even though two may have Depression, only one may qualify for disability and not the other. I know that there is minor depression, and can level all the way up to Major Depression, I guess that is where they draw the line. For if you have Major Depression, your not at all able to function with everyday things in life, let alone go to work and deal with that additional stress each day.
What are you suppose to do if your not totally fully disabled, but your not able to work a regular everyday full time job as you used to do. What if your not close to retirement age, and if you do try to retire early due to health, your given a loss of money choice. Don’t understand how that can really be fare. What happens when there are the ones who need it, and may even risk their own health to continue on, as they do not perfectly qualify for permanent disability.
Then take a look at the ones I see showing on TV, that they are claiming full disability, and yet they are seen running down the street, I think its the ones like that, that hurts the ones who actually need it. And who is to say, someone sitting in a nice comfortable office, has a daily meal, paycheck come in regularly, and has insurance to go and keep up with their doctor appoints, what really gives them the right to look over an application and say “Denied”, or “Approved”, how do they know if it is legitimate. They say you need doctor records, and such, but as it also states in a research part I did that, doctors do not always find the actual illness to confirm it, nor do they always know if it is capable of causing permanent disability.
I see a man or women can walk into a DMV with a slight limp or a cane, and come out with a Handicap tag, I know for fact my daughter law got a temporary one while pregnant as she told them it hurt her legs to walk too far while pregnant due to slight pressure on pelvic area. So how can not a woman go in, who has knees that hurt so bad, some days she can hardly walk up the stairs, or when she bends down to get something in bottom fridge, or put air in a tire, her knees are so bad, she cannot get up, but to crawl to a chair, or bumper of car, to use the support to help herself up. But is that considered any type of disability, No.
What do you do when you go in and see a doctor for routine appointment, find there is something wrong, and you end up having to have surgery, they inform you that the lining on your insides just are wearing thin, and do not support your body, After a couple of years, you have to have the surgery again, and they say again about a year later, it is starting to happen again, but will not operate till at its worse as it will keep happening. You are put on a 5 pound weight limit for the rest of your life. But they then inform you that the problem is not considered a permanent disability, which I find hard to believe if you cannot lift over 5 lbs for the rest of your life, can’t pick up your child, not play with them the way you used to do, maybe sit on couch with them on lap, but not be able to stand hold them, carry them, lift them up to put the Star on the tree. When you think about it, how many everyday household chores cause you to lift more then 5 pounds. The trash might weigh more then that when it needs to be taken out.
I know a woman from a relative, who has been on permanent disability for many a years, saying she has back problems and can’t work, yet she was doing back massages for people at home for a bit. Strange? She collects child support and alimony, even though all kids grown, only one in college classes, and she gets plenty from disability. I am not sure if she ever worked a day in her life.
So how is it that someone has worked from day one out of school, constant, and yet, cant get disability when your knees wont work properly, or you are told you cannot lift your child anymore like you use to, and will require yet another surgery. And figuring how to pay for that surgery is a whole new story.
The economy is at one of it’s worst times right now, and with all the unemployment right now, things are so boggled up everywhere. My friend told me that she even had to go yell at doctors off as it had been a whole month almost since last part disability check, and the doctor only writes her out two week periods at a time for Depression. But it takes the doctors business office, about a week and half to get the note sent out to the disability office, then they have to process, oh my gosh, a month without money, she has hardly ate, gave her some food, but would not take much, she has borrowed to pay utilities and part rent, those want their money back, so what is she suppose to do. They deal with more delays, more heartache, more depression.
I guess maybe I am just venting here today, as it was a bit depressing for me today when she came to use computer and told me all of this, we spent over an hour trying to look up information on-line and trying to sort through all the mumbo jumbo and understand what all the formal codes meant, and who actually qualified and who does not.
I believe that if a (shrink) is working with depression, and has had this patient for over 6 months, at least they should somehow write them out for a longer period of time. As you have to notify disability when you return to work, and are able to do so before your note expires if your up to it, but this headache the system is causing right now for the ones who really need it. Why does the disability call you and ask questions and due to the health issue, will say that they will set you up an auto check every two weeks, but that never happens, then when it’s been so long since a check, you wait forever on phone to find that, No, that was a mistake, you need to send in new doctor note again. Well, gee whiz, you would of done that if the guy had not told you would send it automatically and they had also sent a form for you to fill out and mail to them if you do return to work, and when you returned. So why do they put you through this twice, have you running around in circles, especially if suffering from depression as any little thing can seem like a big major thing to you, so imagine how this all makes you feel.
I just wish there was an easier way for the ones who really need it, to get their checks on time, and the ones who have symptoms that seem fair enough, or told never can pick up their child or grandchild on regular basis anymore, that they should also be able to get permanent disability, and it not make them have to retire early and lose money for doing so, just seems a bit unfair to me…
These are my own opinions, my own thoughts, do not wish to force any on anyone, as we each have our own thoughts and opinions, but just wanted to share my thoughts today.

Many people exploit the system while those in need suffer.

Others benefit that do not deserve it while those that really need the help must go without. I myself suffer from Fibromyalgia (for ten years) and am unable to go out to work. I am at home without a paying job and my husband is forced to support the six of us on his own. That is not fair, but others who have excellent health are getting benefits that people like myself should be receiving. Thanks for the article.

My mother could not get disability till she was dying; yet, my ex-husband was able to get it as a fairly young man because of having a perforated colon. Sometimes I think it has to do with how sincerely you wish not to work. Mother was a workaholic. Not working was really hard on her when she truly had to stop. A lot depends on where you are, how good your social worker is, how willing your doctor is to work with you, and the social climate at the time of your application. I’m not sure there are any really good answers. Being disabled could happen to any of us for any number of reasons, so this is a good question–but I’m not sure it has a good answer.

Right with you there,CD. Why is it some people can collect unemployment while attending school and others cannot?
I’m too young for some services, and too old for others. Paying taxes doesn’t get you as far as it once did.
It doesn’t matter. “The Man” is beginning to work with me though, and I take it one day at time, hoping for the best.

You have hit a sore spot here, and that is why our country is going down, we have allowed people to make excuses no to work.
As a person, I know Bipoplar individuals who are working and contributing to society

Some rules should really be reviewed. I also know some people like that, just taking other people’s taxes to support their lives even if they can still work while those who deserved to be helped do not get any.
