Should Disabled Migrants be Allowed Into Australia
Whats your Opinion? This article explains all the different side that can be taken when arguing this topic.
Australia welcomes migrants, however if a migrant with a disability were to be granted permanent residency in Australia this would raise many issues. Many people would argue that disabled migrants are a drain on the community financially, they use health care resources that are needed by Australians and that they don’t contribute to our country in any way. It could also be argued against these claims saying that there is a wide range of degree of disability, that the other family members that migrate with the disabled person could help them and even though a migrant has a disability they may still be able to work.
Disabled people are a financial drain on the community. These people require government money to look after them and do not pay tax, work or put money back into the economy. The disability support pension can supply these people with $300 ranging up to $600 per fortnight. However the degree of disability also determines how much of a financial burden the disabled are.
Disabled people are limited by their degree of disability. A disability can be categorized into four groups, profound – meaning they always need help to perform a core activity, severe – meaning they sometimes need assistance to perform a core activity, moderate – meaning they don’t need assistance but have trouble performing a core activity and mild where they have no trouble performing a core activity buy use aids such as hearing aid or guide dog. The degree of disability also determines how much the disabled use health care resources.
All disabled migrants will require some health care resources during their life. Some people will require more than others depending upon their degree of disability. The health care resources that the disabled would require include the attention of doctors, nurses and carers and also the use of hospitals, rehab clinics and specialist services. Disabled Australians should have access to these resources over migrants because disabled Australians live in this country and disabled migrants have chosen to come to this country. However if the disabled migrant had a family that could care for them this would reduce the amount of health care resources they require.
If a disabled migrant were to bring a family across to Australian with them this could reduce the amount they rely on the government and health care services. A family could care for them and also work in Australia which would contribute to the economy. A family could also provide financial assistance to the disabled family member so the government didn’t have to. Although the family members would contribute to the country the disabled person wouldn’t.
The profoundly and severely disabled people can not contribute to the country in any way. These people can not work and are not independent. If these people could work they would find it hard to find a job because they are not sought after and would have special requirements. Not only can these people not work but they couldn’t volunteer or help out in the community. However if the person was mildly disabled they might be able to do some work.
A disabled person in a wheel chair would still be able to work in an office provided there mind is ok. Many people with a mild disability can work normally with the use of an aid. Most migrants will want to succeed even if they have a disability so they will have a good work ethic. So just because someone is disabled doesn’t mean they can’t contribute.
In conclusion I think that if a disabled migrant wants to come to Australia and work they should be granted permanent residency providing they are relatively independent. However I also think that disabled migrants that do not come here to work and require lots of attention should be rejected permanent residency because they choose to come here but can’t contribute.

I am disabled with a leg amputation and have contributed thousands of dollars to research and development of rehabilitation devices for disabled people both in New Zealand and Australia, the message given here is your lack of knowledge and understanding of disabled people is nothing more than discrimination based on ignorance.
I have purchased houses in Australia, contributing to the state tax fund, and the mortgage companies rediculous profits. I work and pay tax but don’t receive any medical or centrelink help.
I also have a son born outside of Australia completeing an apprenticeship where he is a hugh asset to his employer at a very low rate and he will contribute to the trade skilled work force on completion.
We never ask for help as it is refused based on residency yet we both contribute greatly.
On the other hand the Australian lady i came to this country to be with has no intention of working or contributing to this nation in anyway and is in receipt of all sorts of Govt hand outs, spending your hard earned tax dollars on hair cuts, waxing and massage while her previous partner and myself support all her essential bills through child support payments.
When will you wake up and assess people on their merrits instead of their nationality or their handicaps.
If you are worried about over stressed welfare handouts and free medical services been abused, look at the residents that have access to the services and blatantly extort them before you look at those that need services but can’t access them.
If you want this country to grow and prosper, consider what people can contribute to make it a better place instead of worrying about sharing something that has been your easy ride.

Hi Loki
I am from the Netherlands, and am married to a disabled lady.
She has a muscle disease and has to depend on her scooter or wheelchair.
We want to go to Australia within 2 years.
I want to work there, she doesn’t. But she brings in money though because she will still get her allowance from the Netherlands. (about 30000 dollar) So i am planning on getting her a medical ensurance and pay for it myself. I dont see a problem with that. Also she can do some community volunteer work, so she will give something back to community.
I think that the government should look for disabled people what they can do, and not what they can’t, and based on that look if a visa is approperiate, dont you?
Greetz from the Netherlands,
Han Peter

i have one arm and have just been granted a residence visa so i can move to australia with my wife who is australian. i am moving because she whants to return home not because i have any desire to draw funds from your goverment, in fact any pensions i recieve in this country will end and i am not entitled to any state funds when i arrive, i have supported myself and my family through hard work and intend continuing this activity when i arrive. i admit i am worried about finding work, but i will!. the biggest hurdle i have to overcome is peaple like you, have you ever met a disabled person? moste dont whant handouts, that would be giving in to there disability, what they whant is as normal a life as they can manage. i suppose your opinions make cold financial sense and im shure hitler would of probbably backed them but im shure moste normal peaple would find them offensive. to repeatedly say severly dissabled peaple have nothing to offer society points you out as a backward thinking, narrow minded hillbilly with nothing to offer society, a steryotype that australia has been trying to move away from, i know australia has plenty of peaple like you but ive also met lots of forward thinking australians trying to move away from this sort of stupidity. right im off to google search the benefits you mentioned,

I think it’s narrow minded to say a disabled individual can’t contribute to society. They also help increase jobs in the health sector. This helps out the economy indirectly. And there are jobs where mental tasks are required that a physically disabled can perform. Hence, I think as a whole Australia is very narrow-minded and short sighted regarding the expansion of its population. People shouldn’t be pentalized for a condition or a disablity that they did not advocate for. Nor should people be excluded as outkast due to their physical limitations.
