There are many considerations when choosing a cane which include functionality, stability, weight and height. You should know that the type of cane you are purchasing will suit your particular needs. The stability of the cane is just as important. You want to make sure that the cane will bear your weight when you are leaning on it so it should be strong and durable.
Weight also becomes a factor when choosing a cane. If the cane is heavy you will tire easily carrying it or you may find it to clumsy. The height is very important. It should be the proper height so that you do not find yourself bent over to much while walking if it is too short. If the cane is too high you will not be able to place your weight on it which renders it just about useless.
To make sure you get the right height on your cane stand straight up with your arms at your side. Choose a cane that comes up to the inside of your wrist. Your elbow should not have to bend more than fifteen to twenty degrees when the cane is in use.
Another consideration would be the type of footwear you will be wearing. If it is the same shoes as you wore when you took your measurements your cane will be fine. If you are planning on changing your footwear during the time you will need your cane you will have to take that into consideration. Take notice that your fingers and thumb curl around the handle of your cane comfortably.
A cane should be held in the opposite hand of the side that is injured. When walking place the injured foot forward the same time as you move your cane to get the support you need. Lean on the cane heavily to take the strain off the injured side.
When using the stairs with a cane take extreme care especially if you are just getting use to the cane. The rule of thumb for descending stairs is to place your good foot and cane on the step first and follow it with your bad foot. Remember to keep your free hand on the railing at all times. This is when you are probably most venerable when using a cane.
Canes can be a wonderful asset to help an injury heal. By relieving the injury from strain it gives it a chance to heal quicker. Do not be in a rush going without your cane. If you discard it too early you can make your injury worse. Canes are the ideal assistance when you find yourself in need of help when walking.
