Are Boomers the Newest Fatality of the Recession?

Baby boomers seem to be getting hit hard in the newest round of lay offs.

A lot of companies are getting hit hard by the recession and are cutting staff by the thousands. This can cause a ripple effect where the businesses that support them are the forced to lay off workers. How does this affect the older worker more than other younger workers? Workers over fifty are closer to retirement age and many are being forced into early retirement with, and in many cases without, whatever retirement benefits the company may offer. This is a disaster for many as their productive lives are literally ended with the stroke of a pen. These same workers are among the most productive and reliable employees a company has but, sadly, are also the most cost effective to remove due to the fact that older and more experienced workers earn more.

Pundits and politicians act concerned and spout ‘Yes, we can”. It is my hope that the new administration in Washington, DC will remember their service and make some provision to help them. The President says “Yes, we can”.

America’s valued older workers can say with pride and honor “Yes,we can too”.

Thank You.
