Be a Hero: How to Help Your Town From Going Bankrupt

A down economy, a high unemployment rate. It seems problems across the United State are incredibly huge ones. You can wait for the Stimulus Package to kick in, or you can do something to make an impact yourself.

How can one person make a difference? Two words: Buy Local.

Think about it. Don’t you want people to buy from the company you work for than from a company that’s across the country… across the world? So start asking yourself, “Where am I buying food and supplies?” Most likely it’s at the major chain stores: Home Depot, McDonalds, Barnes ‘N Nobles. If you’re like most Americans, you’re letting most of your money leave your community, leave your state.

Just consider how often you are letting your money leave your community:

  • Where do you buy your coffee… Starbucks or the local coffee shop?
  • Where do you go out to dinner… Applebees or the local diner?
  • Where do you buy gifts… a chain store at the mall or a local boutique?

Locate the local businesses in your town and make a point to try them out. Chances are you may pay a little more, but you’re probably going to get better quality. Also, realize that you’re helping a local store stay in business. If a thousand people substituted their weekly McDonald’s splurge for a sandwich at a local diner, than that diner will probably make an extra $5,000 or more each week. That means they might hire more workers. More people in your town employed leads to more people spending money leads to more people getting employed.

It all comes full circle.
