Dismantling the Budget 2: Car Scrapping Scheme

Part two of deconsrutcting the budget, looking at Alastair Darling’s plan for the British economy. In this section I will be looking at the car scrapping scheme.

• From next month until March 2010 motorists to get £2,000 discount on new cars if they trade in cars older than 10 years

·  The government will provide £1,000 with the industry expected to provide the other half

This is clearly a part of Labour’s new ‘Low Carbon Economy’. Old cars chuck out more carbon than new ones and are far less efficient. So in theory, getting this carbon spewing petrol guzzlers off the road is a good idea right? Cheaper to run (Especially considering the increase in fuel duty) and better for the environment. We all win right?

Wrong. For starters, this only applies to NEW cars. A new car costs £10,000 to £15,000 pounds (or more). Many of Britain’s families can’t afford to buy a brand new car, and even if they can, why waste money on a new car when you can get one with a few miles on it for a hugely reduced priced? When we’re talking this level of money, £2,000 really isn’t that much. Basically, the only people who drive cars that are over 10 years old, are unlikely to be able to scrape together the money for a brand new car- even with a £2,000 discount!

Plus, what happens to all the scrapped motor vehicles? Getting rid of all that scrap presents a large environmental and logistical challenge. So what do we gain from this idea of Darling’s? Bugger all.

I agree! where am i meant to come up with the rest of the money whilst im getting taxed more, wage cuts at work, price of my diesel going up, my council tax going up, my car insurence being 800 quid just because i am a 21 year old man and not forgetting the 180 pound car tax i pay. They will expect everyone to buy on finance but i think that is what has put us in this situation in the first place- people borrowing to much money!. Sorry for the rant but they wind me up. it’s just that the last thing i can remember is this is a labour government but as a young working class male i can’t realy see what they’re doing for me at the moment. they should spend less time sending slanderous emails and more time sorting out how the hell we are going to sort out our economy and hanging up pictures of MAGGIE THATCHER for christ sake in rooms in downing street
