Economy Round Up
Looking back at our recession crisis during the first half of 2009.
Jobs are one of the most important and talked about factors to do with the recession. It was jobs that caught the attention of many and made them focus on the reality of this nightmare. Suddenly everywhere was closing down. Places that had been around for years such as Dell, who decided to up and move to Poland after years of their location in Ireland. But like any other company at the moment they weren’t thinking about their workers they were thinking about the cost of running their business. Not only were companies closing down but jobs were being let go left, right and centre.
Some of the most talked about job losses at the moment are Waterford Crystal and Dublin Bus. Waterford crystal probably being the most violent of the lot, so far after workers woke up to find that they no longer have a job. There wasn’t pleasant talks there what so ever.
It seems to be the people who are not exactly rich that are the ones who are affected most by this recession. When are the rich going to have to feel the wrath of the recession and make the sacrifices that most others are making.
Now with the introduction of tax levies on low income earners, it seems the ordinary Joe Soap is yet again the target of the government. People who are not making that much money are forced to pay a levy of 1%. Surely this is not going to help people survive in this world at this moment.
Like every story there should be a happy ending so is there an advantage to the worst economic downturn in years. Well maybe there is. No matter what way you might look at this it is a good thing for the economy that could save us a lot of money. It is none other than Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, due to the recession Ireland has reached its CO2 Kyoto target ahead of the agreed date. Gas emission may actually fall by 5% as a result of deeper economic recession.
It might not be the best thing to hear but it is always good to end on a happy note.
