Germany Has Spent 17,000 Million Euros in 10 Years in Afghanistan

The mission of German troops in Afghanistan has cost 17,000 million euroswithin the last ten years, according to estimates announced Monday by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW).

The institute based in Berlin stressed that three times that amount initiallybudgeted by the federal government, which had estimated a cost of 5,500 millioneuros for the ten-year duration of the mission so far.

The DIW also believes that until the planned withdrawal of German troops fromAfghanistan, scheduled for late 2014, still others will have to pay 5,000 millioneuros, with the Germanic military mission would cost more than 22,000 millioneuros.

DIW experts base their calculations on the costs of personnel, measures for the creation of infrastructure and provision of equipment or maintenance.

They include not only defense spending, but investment by foreign ministries and development aid to stabilize the region and the social costs of death or injuries suffered by soldiers.
